With two and a half days off of school marking the end of the first quarter, eight Great Bend girls took the opportunity to learn valuable sewing skills in a class offered by the Great Bend Recreation Commission. The class, "Sewing t-shirt pillows and quilt", was taught by Cindy Warner over two days, Friday and Monday with space and sewing machines donated by the Barton County Extension Service. At the end of the final class, the girls had a pillow to go home with, and had helped to create part of a quilt to be given away.

In the story, it was stated that the Defense program was not subject to sequestration. In fact, Defense is subject to sequestration. Active Army troops assigned to the 1st Cavalry, Combat Aviation Brigade out of Fort Riley made a stop in Great Bend Wednesday morning to refuel at the Great Bend Municipal Airport. It was part of the first leg of a two-day long cross-country mission that will bring the soldiers and about 30 helicopters from Fort Riley, Kan. to Fort Irwin, Calif. An overnight stop in Santa Fe, New Mexico is planned for later today.

A Great Bend man was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita late Monday morning after a one-vehicle collision on U.S. 281, 2 miles south of Great Bend. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred at 11:57 a.m.
