The USD Board of Education heard a proposal by the GBHS student council Tuesday at the monthly noon meeting at Jefferson Elementary School. Representatives from the Great Bend High School student council asked for approval for an all-student community service project. The students hope to organize the student body to take on several cleaning and maintenance projects at the school and around town from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24. "The aim of the project is to foster a sense of community responsibility and giving back," said senior class president Chon Chavez.
The meeting room at Barton County College's Fine Arts building was filled to capacity by concerned constituents eager to interact with "Big First" U.S. House Representative Tim Huelskamp Tuesday morning. Trustees at Barton Community College approved new parking lot construction and a major software purchase when they met Monday. They gave tentative approval to a new lease agreement for an expanded facility at Grandview Plaza.
Ross Vogel of Rural Housing Partners and Jason Hogan, contractor for RHP, one of the builder's to propose the construction of new homes in Hoisington, met with the Hoisington City Council Monday night. He came to ask the city to agree to pave Vine Street, where RHP proposes to build on seven lots on both sides of the cul-de-sac.

Average retail gasoline prices in Kansas have risen 5.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.42 per gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 1,329 gas outlets in Kansas. This compares with the national average that has increased 4.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.66.
