AmeriCorps worker helps herself by helping others

Connie Smith is a firm believer that volunteers gain as much from helping others as the recipients of their service gain. After wrapping up a year as an AmeriCorps member at Catholic Social Service in Great Bend, Smith hopes to be chosen for a second year with the program, while pursuing her goal of becoming an elementary school teacher.

CULVERT OPERATIONS

The Barton County Road and Bridge Department has replaced six culverts recently. This may not sound like big news, except that one of the jobs incorporated a new, unique method.

County appraisal inspections under way

According to state law, the Barton County Appraiser's Office is required to re-inspect 17 percent of the properties in the county each year. This process is now under way, it was reported at the Barton County Commission Monday morning.

County, city OK private fireworks

Now the fireworks ball is in the Hoisington City Council's court. Both the Barton County Commission and Great Bend City Council Monday approved setting Saturday, Sept. 29, as the date for the private discharge of fireworks.

Kansas Highway Patrol responded to three injury accidents in central Kansas over the weekend, including fatal collisions in Barton and Stafford counties and another accident in Ellsworth County.

The Barton County Commission Monday morning approved a resolution honoring native county resident and long-time local businessman Wendell Doonan by declaring Monday as Wendell Doonan Day in Barton County.

Commission rejects county road gates

Barton County Commissioners had no idea what a hornets nest they were stirring up when they started talking about closing or gating a sandy road in the extreme southeastern corner of the county. They found out and, based on ears full of negative feedback and the fear of setting a dangerous precedent, opted Monday morning not to act of the request from some are landowners.

Firefighters climb 110 flights of stairs for 9/11 tribute

KANSAS CITY, MO. - As the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks approached last week, three Great Bend firefighters paid tribute to the 343 firefighters who lost their lives. Dressed in full bunker gear, including air packs, they climbed 110 flights of stairs – representing the 110 flights of the Twin Towers.

Kids show pedal power at Kiwanis bicycle race

Brody Schneider didn't need pedals as he raced across the finish line Saturday in the Kiwanis bike race at Brit Spaugh Park. Brody was first in the 3-year-old division, the first race of the day, and continued to push his scooter around the park as older kids lined up to compete.

Daredevil to jump 10 trucks in Great Bend

No matter how many times Bubba Blackwell lands one of his death-defying jumps, he never lets it go to his head. After a tragic crash in 2001 while attempting to clear fourteen semi-trucks, Blackwell nearly lost his life.
