A steering committee made up of representatives from the City of Great Bend and several local organizations is making preparations to apply for the designation as one of the "100 Best Communities for Young People," awarded by the America's Promise Alliance each year.
KINSLEY – The Kansas Humanities Council recently awarded the Edwards County Historical Society and the Kinsley Library $3,397 in support of the "Kansas Military Forts and the Indian Wars" discussion series. Leo Oliva, Ph.D. will be facilitating the series with guided lectures and discussions.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation, assisted by the Great Bend Police Department, Barton County Sheriff's Office and Ellinwood Police Department, executed three search warrants in the cities of Great Bend and Ellinwood on Thursday.
The Great Bend City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the City Office, 12?? Williams. The agenda will include DARE essay winners, a recognition of 10- and 25-year city employees, a request for an oil and gas lease at the Great Bend Municipal Airport and a discussion of the Great Bend Convention Center.
Wednesday afternoon, the GBHS A Cappella Choir and Madrigals Pops Singers put the finishing touches on the 2012 Christmas Vespers concert. Dressed in robes, the group of 110 were picture perfect for videographers taping the program at Barton Community College.
On Tuesday, members of the Barton County Young Professionals group gathered for their third annual Ugly Sweater Christmas party. While the mood was festive and light-hearted, the group was doing some serious good as well, said YP chairman Kristy Straub. Members collected a large box of items for the Barton County Food Bank, along with over $100 in cash donations.
The Golden Belt Community Foundation recently completed its third competitive grant cycle for 2012 and awarded $10,122.54 to charitable agencies and projects in Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties.
ELLINWOOD - Ryan J. Placher, 25, of Ellinwwod was travelling west on highway U.S. 56 approximately half a mile east of Ellinwood when the vehicle went off the right shoulder at about 5 p.m. on Tuesday evening. He overcorrected, came back onto the roadway, and slid sideways in to oncoming traffic. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol Crash log, a Ford 2008 F250 driven by Marion D. Newkirk, 55, of Lyons saw the vehicle , but was unable to avoid the collision.
Phil Shoemaker may be "retiring" from coaching NCAA volleyball, but his work is only beginning at Barton Community College. The board of trustees approved his appointment as the college's new head volleyball coach at Tuesday's meeting.
There are a lot of things to love about Christmas, but one of the best is the gift of giving, "Christmas is the spirit of giving. And what we try to do is give ourselves. It is the little things that mean a lot. You don't have to win the lottery before you can give back," said Randy Smith.

Great Bend police received reports of criminal damage to property at two locations on Saturday morning. Someone threw paint on the side of the house at 1208 Morphy St., and someone spray painted the Funtime Bingo building at 2805 Ninth St.
A 20-year-old man told Great Bend police he was battered by someone carrying a knife, around 9:46 p.m. Friday in the area of 19th and Holland St. He did not know the subject. An aggravated battery case was taken.
St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend will accept out-dated and broken electronic items for recycling from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 30. The church is located at 21st and Jackson St. This project is being done in cooperation with the Barton County Landfill, which also accepts "e-waste."
Prairie Godmothers – the local organization of women helping women – held a Build-A-Bag Brunch on Friday and members filled more than 100 gift bags that will be distributed to single mothers in the coming weeks.
