HOUSTON – Clean Line Energy Partners is hosting two weeks of public open house meetings in Kansas inviting community members and landowners to learn about the Grain Belt Express Clean Line transmission project. During these meetings, Clean Line staff members will discuss potential routing options for the high voltage direct current electric transmission line project and provide the public an opportunity to provide feedback.
Saturday, Barton County Habitat for Humanity will host the fourth annual Barton County's Got Talent show at 7 p.m. at Grace Community Church, 210 McKinley. Director Rachel Mawhirter said this is the all volunteer organization's main fundraiser for the year, and the outcome will help determine how soon the next build will happen. It will also help kick off a new service for Habitat applicants who are struggling to maintain their homes.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The Phoenix man accused of rear-ending a pedicab carrying two Great Bend men, severely injuring them Friday, Jan. 4, in Scottsdale, Ariz., has now been indicted on the same charges that were filed against him last week, said Jerry Cobb, Maricopa County Attorney's Office spokesman.
Relay for Life of Barton County organizers will hold their kick-off for the 2013 Relay for Life from 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the Great Bend Knights of Columbus Hall, 723 Main. The theme for this year's event will be announced at that time.
January is School Board Recognition Month, and the administration, faculty and staff of USD 428 made a point of doing just that at Monday night's school board meeting. Each board member received a gift of a pie.
At the USD 428 Board of Education meeting Monday night, Superintendent Tom Vernon prepared board members for some of the questions they will likely receive from patrons. He also addressed recent developments with the Gannon Decision concerning school funding by the state.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission ended its last fiscal year with more than $1 million in the bank, board members were told Monday. Curtis Kuhn with D. McMillen Chartered certified public accounting firm of Great Bend presented an audit report that showed no irregularities.
A week ago, President Obama and Congress avoided sending the country over the fiscal cliff, at least for a few months. Senators Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran and House Representative Tim Huelskamp have issued their statements about their positions on the last second agreement.
Donna Zimmerman, Barton County Election Officer, has announced the following elective positions are available for the April 2 general election. Council positions are available for the cities of Great Bend, Hoisington, Ellinwood, Claflin, Albert, Galatia, Olmitz, Pawnee Rock and Susank. School board spots will be available for Great Bend, Hoisington and Ellinwood. Spots for the Barton County Board of Trustees and Ellinwood Hospital District Board are also available.
The shootings at Newtown, Conn., and the possibility that Kansas may eventually allow people with permits to bring concealed weapons on campus, have prompted the trustees at Barton Community College to review security policies.
