Health Department administers WIC to five county area

Barton County Health Department Administrator Lily M Aikings and Beverly Frizell, RD work every day to ensure babies in Barton County get off to the healthiest start possible. They are in charge of the local Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) up to 5 years old. WIC focuses on providing food assistance and education, and has been around since 1969. The Great Bend office administers the program over a five county area that includes Barton, Pawnee, Rush, Rice and Stafford counties.

By a split vote Monday morning, the Barton County Commission voted to lend $43,300 of the county's Community Development Block Grant funds to Custom Re-Bath of Great Bend for an expansion/remodeling project. The approval came amid concerns from some commissioners about the what they called the riskiness of the loan.

If it weren't for the new St. Rose Ambulatory & Surgery Center service, Bill Maneth most likely would have had to hire someone to drive him to the University of Kansas Cancer Center. But thanks to new technology, Maneth was able to consult with a KU physician in real time at St. Rose.
