The Great Bend High School debate team competed at the Valley Center Halloween Tournament Saturday, Oct. 30. This is the team's fifth weekend of debate competition. They have continued to bring home awards from every tournament.

Parrish chosen as grand marshal of holiday parade
Bob Parrish has been chosen to lead Great Bend's holiday parade on Nov. 27, sponsors at Sunflower Diversified Services announced. Little lawmen and firefighters walked the streets with cowboys, ninjas and princesses, Saturday in downtown Great Bend. Mild fall weather boosted attendance at the annual Halloween parade, where hundreds of kids picked up candy.
8 Wonders of Kansas people announced
INMAN – After six weeks of voting, the Kansas Sampler Foundation announced the results of the 8 Wonders of Kansas People contest. Former Great Bend resident and microchip pioneer Jack Kilby, and Civil War nurse and veterans advocate Mary Ann "Mother" Bickerdyke (who lived at Bunker Hill, Ellsworth, Great Bend and Russell) were not among the top vote getters.

A dozen cowgirls? That's right. Candidates file pre-general campaign reports
On Oct. 25 treasurers for candidates running for state and county office filed their pre-general election campaign reports. BARTON COUNTY - Regional Prevention Centers around the state are highlighting the 2010 Communities That Care student school surveys, and the results show Barton County's rates for overall alcohol use, binge drinking and drug use is higher than the average for the state and surrounding counties. Gov. Brownback addresses BCC graduates
Gov. Sam Brownback congratulated students on achieving a major milestone Friday, during Barton Community College's 43rd commencement ceremony. TLC Twisters bring comfort to shelter dogs
The TLC Twisters 4-H club at TLC Discoveries built eight dog beds which they presented to the Golden Belt Humane Society last week. The beds, made of donated PVC pipe and nylon material, will provide a place for puppies and smaller dogs to relax off the cement floor. They are easily hosed off, and are quick drying, making them ideal for a kennel environment.
Hoisington to host annual ‘Mud Run’
HOISINGTON - Engines will once again roar as drivers try to drive through the mud at the fourth annual Mud Run at 1 p.m. on June 1 in Hoisington, south of the railroad track on the east side of U.S. 281. It will be held in conjunction with the Kansas Mud Racing Organization.
