Lineman injured when bucket truck tips over

A Midwest Energy lineman making repairs to a power pole south of Great Bend was injured Tuesday morning, when the bucket truck holding him aloft tipped, sending his bucket to the ground.

More funds set up for pedicab wreck victims

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The Phoenix man accused of rear-ending a pedicab carrying two Great Bend men, severely injuring them Friday, Jan. 4, in Scottsdale, Ariz., has now been indicted on the same charges that were filed against him last week, said Jerry Cobb, Maricopa County Attorney's Office spokesman.

Relay for Life organizers plan kick-off event

Relay for Life of Barton County organizers will hold their kick-off for the 2013 Relay for Life from 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the Great Bend Knights of Columbus Hall, 723 Main. The theme for this year's event will be announced at that time.

Recreation Commission board hears audit report

The Great Bend Recreation Commission ended its last fiscal year with more than $1 million in the bank, board members were told Monday. Curtis Kuhn with D. McMillen Chartered certified public accounting firm of Great Bend presented an audit report that showed no irregularities.

Elective offices must be filed by Jan. 22

Donna Zimmerman, Barton County Election Officer, has announced the following elective positions are available for the April 2 general election. Council positions are available for the cities of Great Bend, Hoisington, Ellinwood, Claflin, Albert, Galatia, Olmitz, Pawnee Rock and Susank. School board spots will be available for Great Bend, Hoisington and Ellinwood. Spots for the Barton County Board of Trustees and Ellinwood Hospital District Board are also available.

The shootings at Newtown, Conn., and the possibility that Kansas may eventually allow people with permits to bring concealed weapons on campus, have prompted the trustees at Barton Community College to review security policies.

County Commission to reorganize Monday

The Barton County Commission will honor out-going elected officials and welcome new ones when it meets at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. There will also be a swearing in of new office holders. Other agenda items include reorganization.

'String Dudes' celebrate quarter century of music

The library of the Barton County Historical Museum will be anything but quiet on Wednesday, when the musical group Jody Adams & the StringDudes performs. This toe-tapping mix of folk-string-gospel-grass-acoustic music starts at 7 p.m. and is presented by the Barton County Arts Council and the Barton County Historical Society. Seats are $10 and will be sold at the door.

BCC needs more space

Barton Community College has been running out of room at its Grandview Plaza location, and a larger site is needed soon, college administrators told the BCC Board of Trustees Thursday. The owner of the building BCC has leased for the last five years has agreed to build a new wing for a long-term rental commitment from the college.
