Local communities without electricity Wednesday morning

​Prisoner Review Board taking comments

Russell Raymond Carrier, 64, serving a sentence for first-degree murder, is eligible for a parole hearing in September. In August, the Kansas Prisoner Review Board will hold public hearings for Carrier and other eligible inmates.

ELLINWOOD - Politicians and political ads were in abundance Saturday for the Ellinwood After Harvest Festival parade. This year's lineup included 95 entries, said Richard Kimple with the Ellinwood Rotary Club, organizers of the parade. At least a dozen of them carried people running for office, or were decorated with candidates' names.

Five arrested in drug warrant sweep

On Tuesday, detectives from the Barton County Sheriff's Office obtained three search warrants for methamphetamine and other illegal drugs. The search warrants were obtained with the assistance and cooperation from the Great Bend Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said.

Cops have suspects in graffiti outbreak

The Great Bend Police Department Detective's Unit has been devoting a considerable amount of time to finding out who has been spray painting graffiti around town, City Administrator Howard Partington told the City Council Monday night. That is starting to show results. "They do have suspects," he said. "Some charges will likely be forthcoming." The Patrol Division has also been focusing its efforts toward catching these perpetrators, he said. Officers are planning some saturation patrol efforts (similar to the Warrant Task Force which has netted numerous drug busts) to address these issues.

​No easy answers for pool issue

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees may vote to shut down the 45-year-old swimming pool in the next three years, or it may look for more ways to finance costly maintenance and repairs. The options were discussed last Thursday at a board study session, and could be on the agenda as action item at the May 28 meeting.

Questions arise on BCC board vacancy

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees may not be able to appoint a replacement for trustee-elect Bob Mead, who died on May 4, as quickly as planned. Great Bend attorney Brock McPherson said that because he received the most votes after Mead in the April election, he should be the person who fills the post when it becomes vacant in July.
