BCC Child Development Center releases annual report

Barton Community College's Child Development Center has increased revenue while cutting expenses, although it still operates in the red, according to the annual report compiled by CDC Director Larissa Graham.

Angry bird

Dr. Mike Malone, veterinarian to the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo, examines the zoo's bald eagle, last Wednesday at the zoo. The eagle was dusted with powder, which deter mites, while zookeepers were busy adding new tree branches to its enclosure. Although the bird was none too happy, it was safely back in its enclosure a short time later.

Barton County falls in health rankings

Barton County was the 86th least healthiest county in Kansas, falling only 15 places above the state's least healthy county, Woodson, according to the ratings from the sixth-annual County Health Rankings released Wednesday. This was a drop from last year when Barton was 68th.

Road work ahead

The Federal Highway Administration and the Kansas Department of Transportation recognize this as National Work Zone Awareness Week. As of Monday morning, it was being observed in Barton County as well after the County Commission approved a proclamation marking the occasion.

Traffic restricted on East Bt. Co. Road

Road construction on U.S. 56 between Great Bend and Ellinwood is expected to last a couple months. During that span, more and more motorists are anticipated to use the parallel East Barton County Road as a detour.

Lewis sworn into office

After receiving official notification last week from the Governor's office, Greg Lewis (R-St. John) was sworn into the Kansas House of Representatives this morning to represent the 113th District. The oath of office was administered by Secretary of State Kris Kobach. Lewis will complete the term of Basil Dannebohm who resigned from office last month.

ElderCare, Inc/Friendship Meals announced today its participation in the 2015 March for Meals – a nationwide community-by-community celebration of the local Meals on Wheels programs that keep seniors independent in their own homes. ElderCare's March for Meals events will include Community Champions Week, March 16-20. Throughout the 28 SW Kansas counties, 42 meal sites will recruit Community Champions to volunteer their time to deliver Meals On Wheels or serve lunch at the local meal center.

Credit Union of America (CUA) gives over $46,000 to the Great Bend community

Credit Union of America's Great Bend office celebrated 40 years of serving members by giving back over the last two months to members, non-members and charitable organizations. The 40-day celebration resulted in $23,160 being given to individuals and matching contributions to five chosen charities.
