It is only in the discussion phase, but teachers and administrators at Great Bend High School are examining switching from block scheduling back to offering seven class periods each day. The topic came up in passing during the Unified School District 428 School Board's luncheon meeting Tuesday at Riley Elementary School.

On Tuesday, detectives from the Barton County Sheriff's Office obtained three search warrants for methamphetamine and other illegal drugs. The search warrants were obtained with the assistance and cooperation from the Great Bend Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said.

The Great Bend Police Department Detective's Unit has been devoting a considerable amount of time to finding out who has been spray painting graffiti around town, City Administrator Howard Partington told the City Council Monday night. That is starting to show results. "They do have suspects," he said. "Some charges will likely be forthcoming." The Patrol Division has also been focusing its efforts toward catching these perpetrators, he said. Officers are planning some saturation patrol efforts (similar to the Warrant Task Force which has netted numerous drug busts) to address these issues.
Verizon Wireless will be allowed to locate a temporary cellular telephone tower near the former St. Rose Ambulatory and Surgery Center. The Great Bend City Council Monday night approved a conditional use permit for the cell service provider.
Kami Maxwell of Odin and Ambonirina Nathanael Razafindrabe of Antananarvio, Madagascar were named Barton Community College's 2015 Outstanding Graduates. Dean of Student Services Angie Maddy introduced them and presented their awards, after which they took the opportunity to address their fellow graduates during the college's 45th commencement ceremony Friday.
Barton County children ages 5 to 12 years can have a great start to a safe summer by participating in the Bike Safety Rodeo the morning of Friday, May 29. It will be held at the small ball field on the northwest side of Brit Spaugh Park, near 22nd and Morton St.
The Barton Community College Board of Trustees may vote to shut down the 45-year-old swimming pool in the next three years, or it may look for more ways to finance costly maintenance and repairs. The options were discussed last Thursday at a board study session, and could be on the agenda as action item at the May 28 meeting.
