Students have been out of school enjoying winter break, and there's still another six days to go. As temperatures dip into the teens and 20s, and snow remains elusive, kids are either reaching ever increasing levels and high-scores on popular video games, making ever deeper indentations on the family sofa as they watch yet one more episode of Good Luck Charlie or Phineas and Ferb, or driving their siblings and/or parents up a wall out of sheer boredom.

A teenage boy suffered major burns Sunday night after playing with fireworks inside a Barton Hills residence. The Barton County Sheriff's Office reports the fire at 646 North Homestead started around 10:20 p.m. when Brennen Donovan, 13, and a 15-year-old boy were playing with fireworks and caught a mattress on fire.

A new Adopt-A-Dog program has begun in Great Bend to help lost or unadopted dogs to find their forever home. Volunteer RaShann Southard and the Golden Belt Humane Society will take adoptable dogs to the Orschselen Farm and Home store, 5320 10th St., for viewing once a month with dates and times to be announced, beginning in February.

On Sept. 27, Great Bend High School's electric vehicle (EV) team competed against other area high schools in the Kansas High Plains ElectroRally in Hays. It was the culmination of several months of planning, designing, building and testing an electric vehicle. The race and photos of the team were highlighted in the Dec. 2012 edition of Kansas Country Living magazine.

TOPEKA –The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Kansas continued to decrease in November to 5.4 percent, while nonfarm and private sector jobs increased slightly since October.

The Barton County Commission will hold its next agenda meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, instead of on Monday, which is Christmas Eve day. The agenda includes the Workforce Investment Board agreement and appointment, cereal malt beverage license renewals, a discussion about a road being declared minimum maintenance and a janitorial services proposal.
