Barton County woman died in wreck

BARTON COUNTY - At 11 a.m. today, Barton County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a one vehicle rollover accident i the 400 block of NW 10 ave. A 2000 Ford Expedition drive by Gwen Hipp, 64, of Hoisington was south bound on NW 10 Ave. when the vehicle left the roadway.

Stolen pickup recovered

A 1988 Dodge Dakota pickup that was stolen from Barton County around the same time law enforcement officers were searching for a fugitive has been recovered, Undersheriff Larry Holliday said. It was found Tuesday in Wichita.

Rare bird visits refuge

STAFFORD COUNTY – Quivira National Wildlife Refuge in Stafford County was recently visited by an adult-phase red-necked stint, representing a potential first-ever Kansas siting for the species, according to information from the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. This small sandpiper, considered very rare in the lower 48 U.S., was seen by dozens of birders at Quivira's Little Salt Marsh July 1 and 2.

Burn ban continues

Even as a gray sky threatened rain, the Barton County Commission Monday morning signed a resolution continuing the county-wide burn ban. Despite showers over the weekend, "we still haven't received a measurable amount of rain," said Amy Miller, county emergency risk manager.

Fugitive may have stolen Barton County vehicle

The Barton County Sheriff's Office announced Sunday evening that the search for fugitive Michael Aaron Jayne had been called off for the Barton County area, after federal authorities confirmed he had left the area. Authorities believe he left in a pickup stolen from a Barton Hills residence.

Hog Feed Sunday to help GBHS A Capella Choir

The Great Bend High School A Capella Choir will hold a hog feed Sunday afternoon from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the high school commons.
