Recently Great Bend city Manager Howard Partington gave the nod to community coordinator Christina Hayes to hire an intern to assist her. After observing her outstanding organizational skills at work with the Panther Paw Craft Fair, Hayes knew GBHS junior Sara McAfee was just the person for the position.

With only two weeks before the City of Great Bend takes over management of the contentious city-owned Convention Center, the City Council Monday night learned that the cost of razing it and starting from scratch would cost about the same as remodeling the existing facility.

The Barton County jail "media log" for Friday, Dec. 14, was released Monday and contained more names of men arrested last week on drug charges, including at least two who are suspects in a Kansas Bureau of Investigation case.
A rumor that there might be shooting at "the high school" spread through two towns Monday afternoon. While students at Great Bend and Larned weren't sure what was going on, law enforcement officers were checking out the same information. Then students with smartphones quickly spread the word through social networks – adding a fair share of speculation. Students said it started with something posted on Facebook.

ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood Grade School fourth graders learned practical measurement skills to supplement in-the-classroom learning on Tuesday, spending the day at Ellinwood High School using the student kitchens and wood lab.
This Thursday, the staff of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development will be making it easier than ever to take care of last-minute Christmas shopping by staying open until 7 p.m. to fill gift certificate orders.
Barton County Office Buildings will be closed both Monday, Dec. 24, and Tuesday, Dec. 25, in observance of the Christmas holiday. The Records Division of the Sheriff's Office and the Health Department will be closed at this same time. The Landfill will close to the public at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 24, and will be closed on Christmas. Emergency services will be in normal operation.
A steering committee made up of representatives from the City of Great Bend and several local organizations is making preparations to apply for the designation as one of the "100 Best Communities for Young People," awarded by the America's Promise Alliance each year.
