WIC dietician works to promote breastfeeding

Beverly Frizell, RD with the Barton County WIC program has been working extra hard to get the word out about the importance of breastfeeding this year to her clients in a multi-county area. It has always been a goal of WIC to increase breastfeeding, but this past year, the Barton County Health Department was awarded a grant to conduct a media campaign to help build awareness among the community as a whole.

Barton County avoids the bite so far

As of Wednesday, Aug. 22, there were 15 confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in the state, but the numbers are on the rise. While the Barton County Health Department said there have been no confirmed cases of the disease within the county at this time, and none are being investigated, one case so far was reported in neighboring Stafford County earlier in August. But Sedgwick County has had the highest number of confirmed cases so far. According to the Sedgwick County Health Department, they've seen unusually high numbers of the virus. Storms bring power outages

Beginning at 11 p.m. Thursday, powerful thunder storms rolled through the Golden Belt and brought down over 300 power poles, Midwest Energy reported Friday morning. The areas impacted hardest were primarily South of K-96, from Jetmore in the west to just west of Hutchinson in the east.

Farm expo coming to town

The 2015 Great Bend Farm and Ranch Expo will be held Wednesday through Friday, April 8, 9, and 10, 2015 in Great Bend. The show is located at the Expo Complex west of town. The show hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on the 8th, 9 a.m.- 7 p.m. on the 9th and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on the 10th with extended hours on Thursday.
