Barton honors former student’s memory with stained glass window

Wiping tears of mixed emotions from their somber faces, Bob and Janice Dunavan removed a small curtain and for the first time laid their eyes on the stained glass window crafted in the name of their son, Michael, who lost a fight at age 27 with his degenerative condition, Freidreich's ataxia, in January of 2008.

Byway summit considered success

The purpose of the Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway Planning Summit last Wednesday in Hoisington was two fold, said Barton County Administrator Richard Boeckman. First, attendees wanted to tout the route's successes and, second, they wanted to identify ways to continue its relevance in the future.

Scouting out the food

On Saturday, October 6th, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts from Great Bend spread out and walked around their neighborhoods, picking up donations of food for the Barton County Food Bank. The day started at 9:00 am. and continued until the boys and their scoutmasters delivered them to the food bank at 3:00 p.m.

EPA to test Great Bend industrial sites

The Environmental Protection Agency will collect soil and water samples this month at the former O'Neill Tank site near the Great Bend Municipal Airport, to determine if there is contamination from hazardous materials. The EPA also plans to collect samples at and around the former Plating Inc. site in the industrial park near the airport. Plating Inc. is a contaminated site that is monitored by EPA's Superfund Division, under a federal program to clean up uncontrolled hazardous waste sites.
