Local DARE essay winners honored

Harper Camperland teamed up with the Great Bend Police Department's Drug Abuse Resistance Education program to recognize and award six students for writing outstanding essays as a part of their D.A.R.E. classes. The winning writers were honored during the Great Bend City Council meeting Monday night.

Cause of fire undetermined

The cause of the Thursday afternoon fire that charred a home at 2222 Monroe remains undetermined, said Luke McCormick, investigator for the Great Bend Fire Department. He spent most of the day Friday at the scene with representative from the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office.

Debbie Eyestone, Great Bend High School English teacher, has been awarded the prestigious Wolfe Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Kansas. The Wolfe Teaching Excellence Awards recognize excellence in secondary-school teaching through nominations by KU undergraduate seniors.

Becoming ‘Organ Wise’

First grade students at Eisenhower Elementary School ended the day Friday in a special assembly courtesy of Barton County Extension Agents Bernie Unruh and Donna Krug.
