Burn ban continues

Even as a gray sky threatened rain, the Barton County Commission Monday morning signed a resolution continuing the county-wide burn ban. Despite showers over the weekend, "we still haven't received a measurable amount of rain," said Amy Miller, county emergency risk manager.

Fugitive may have stolen Barton County vehicle

The Barton County Sheriff's Office announced Sunday evening that the search for fugitive Michael Aaron Jayne had been called off for the Barton County area, after federal authorities confirmed he had left the area. Authorities believe he left in a pickup stolen from a Barton Hills residence.

As if it didn't have enough to worry about with the recent snag-plagued computer upgrade, the Barton County Treasurer's Office is now being told by state official it has to strictly enforce the requirement that current insurance information be presented when vehicular tags are renewed.

BCC Trustees add capital projects to proposed budget

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees heard a preliminary budget report at Thursday's study session. Dean of Business Management Mark Dean said he doesn't anticipate a mill levy increase for next year's budget, based on early figures on Barton County assessments. The mill levy was 32.807 in 2010-11 and 32.771 in 2011-12.

A 20-year-old man told Great Bend police he was battered by someone carrying a knife, around 9:46 p.m. Friday in the area of 19th and Holland St. He did not know the subject. An aggravated battery case was taken.

St. Mark Lutheran Church to host e-recycle collection

St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend will accept out-dated and broken electronic items for recycling from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 30. The church is located at 21st and Jackson St. This project is being done in cooperation with the Barton County Landfill, which also accepts "e-waste."
