Fate took Kilby from Kansas blizzard to Nobel Prize

Early in April 1938, a massive snow and ice storm knocked out most of the telephone and power lines in Western Kansas. With communications down, the electric, gas and oil companies were scrambling to make contact with their distant offices and crews. Amateur radio operators came to the rescue and inspired a young high school student named Jack Kilby.

Noted author T.R. Reid plans Great Bend visit to honor Kilby

Writing a book about the inventor of the microchip led to a lifelong friendship between 2000 Nobel Prize winner Jack Kilby and journalist T.R. Reid. When a sculpture honoring Kilby is unveiled on April 28 in downtown Great Bend, Reid will attend the 7:30 p.m. ceremony.

ElderCare,Inc /Friendship Meals joins local Meals on Wheels Organizations across the country to cele

ElderCare, Inc/Friendship Meals announced today its participation in the 2015 March for Meals – a nationwide community-by-community celebration of the local Meals on Wheels programs that keep seniors independent in their own homes. ElderCare's March for Meals events will include Community Champions Week, March 16-20. Throughout the 28 SW Kansas counties, 42 meal sites will recruit Community Champions to volunteer their time to deliver Meals On Wheels or serve lunch at the local meal center.
