Evening celebration planned for Kilby sculpture unveiling

When "The Gift" sculpture is unveiled on April 28 in the courthouse square, it will be at night. Special lighting will illuminate three bronze figures, which are the centerpieces of the Jack Kilby Memorial Plaza.

Justice may move a little slower in Kansas after the Kansas Supreme Court announced Monday dates for scheduled furloughs of court employees and the closing of Kansas courts, including Barton County District Court.

Play Ball: GBRC board tours GB Sports Complex

Great Bend Recreation Commission Board members took a tour of the new Great Bend Sports Complex on Monday. The ball diamonds and facilities are in use now, with a May 8 grand opening planned by the city.

​Man reports being pulled from car, kidnapped; car set on fire

A Great Bend man told police he pulled from a car, beaten, and then driven into the country late Saturday. At 5 a.m. Sunday, the car he was driving was found burning on an oil lease road north of Great Bend. The Great Bend Police Department, Barton County Sheriff's Office and State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating.

State: Text message leads to tragic conclusion

Evidence proves Adam Longoria is guilty of stalking, sexually assaulting and, ultimately, killing 14-year-old Alicia DeBolt, then fleeing Great Bend in a stolen vehicle, prosecuting attorney Kevin O'Connor of the Kansas Attorney General's Office told jurors Friday morning during his closing arguments in Longoria's capital murder trial.

Historical Society showing ham radios used by Kilby

Years before Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit, the future Nobel Prize winner was learning about electronics at a Radio Shack at 12th and Monroe in Great Bend. Now the Barton County Historical Village and Museum is displaying some of the objects that sparked young Kilby's interest in science.

Storms bring power outages

Beginning at 11 p.m. Thursday, powerful thunder storms rolled through the Golden Belt and brought down over 300 power poles, Midwest Energy reported Friday morning. The areas impacted hardest were primarily South of K-96, from Jetmore in the west to just west of Hutchinson in the east.

Farm expo coming to town

The 2015 Great Bend Farm and Ranch Expo will be held Wednesday through Friday, April 8, 9, and 10, 2015 in Great Bend. The show is located at the Expo Complex west of town. The show hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on the 8th, 9 a.m.- 7 p.m. on the 9th and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on the 10th with extended hours on Thursday.
