The Ellinwood Fire Department hosted an area-wide firefighters conference on Rapid Intervention Techniques to rescue trapped firefighters on Monday night at St. Joseph Parish Hall in Ellinwood.

A local program that helps get senior citizens to out-of-town doctor appointments will get almost $6,000 in county funding, the Barton County Commission decided this week.
Local officials are being encouraged to "work with" ATV riders in their recreational use of the local flood control levee system, but they were also warned that if damage to the levees continues unabated, it could end up costing many local residents - and costing them a lot, whether they enjoy ATV riding or not.

The Barton County Fair Board and its Barbecue Committee have invited cookers from across the nation to bring the heat to cold central Kansas for the third-annual Winter Q barbecue cookoff. The event is set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Expo Complex west of Great Bend.

At the Kansas State Fair in September, then Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson unveiled the artwork for a new postage stamp that celebrates the Kansas' sesquicentennial. The stamp features an traditional windmill in the foreground and a row of modern wind turbines in the background.
Students across the state are studying word lists as they prepare for the Great Bend Tribune's Sunflower Spelling Bee on March 12. But in order to compete in that regional qualifier for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, student must first win county championships. Barton County students will get that chance this Saturday, said Paul Snapp, with the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis.
There are still a few days left for those who want to vote in the coming local election to register to vote, according to information from County Clerk Donna Zimmerman.
State health and safety officials want fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in every home in Kansas and a grant recently received by the Great Bend Fire Department will help local firefighters do their part.

"Things that glow" was the subject Wednesday at the Great Bend Public Library, as the summer reading program continues. At Glow Parties in the morning and afternoon, kids sat under ultraviolet "black" lights that made neon colors glow as Children's Librarian "Miss Amanda" read "The Day-Glo Brothers," the true story of Bob and Joe Switzer's bright ideas and brand new colors.
The Kansas Department of Commerce announced this week that 25 nonprofit organizations, including the Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation, will share $4.13 million in tax credits under the Kansas Community Service Tax Credit Program. Since 1994, CSP has helped nonprofit organizations undertake major capital fund-raising drives for various projects.

USD 428 Director of Business Operations Khris Thexton gave a brief update on the progress of various capital improvement projects at learning centers around the district Monday night at the July meeting of the Board of Education.
To help shore up reserves, the Barton County Commission Monday morning approved transferring money from the Oil and Gas Valuation Depletion Trust Fund. However, the commission was warned this critical piece of county funding will not be around for much longer.

Star of Hope is proud to announce the dedication of the new church building in Hesse, Haiti. The original church building was rendered useless and unsafe by the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti. On June 28, more than 250 people gathered in the new mountain church to dedicate it to the use of the people in the area. The church is located next to the new Hesse School also rebuilt since the 2010 earthquake. In addition to being used for church services it will also be used by the school for assemblies.
