As local safety officials, and state agencies, too, are preparing to educate the Kansas public about severe weather safety for another round of the storm season, a local couple are concerned about storm-related issues close to home - right on the west edge of Great Bend, as a matter of fact.

ELLINWOOD - USD 355 Ellinwood School District has hired a new athletic director, Derek Schoenthaler, who moved to Ellinwood three weeks ago.
The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend, or immediately following the canvassing the Tuesday, Aug. 5, primary ballots. According to state law, the Appraiser's Office is required to re-inspect 17 percent of the county each year. Barton County Appraiser Barb Esfeld said this year, her staff is measuring and inspecting properties located south of K-4 to 50 Road, including the rural areas and Olmitz, part of Hoisington, Albert and Barton Hills. Properties that have sold recently and/or have building permits will also be inspected.
