Beverly Frizell, RD with the Barton County WIC program has been working extra hard to get the word out about the importance of breastfeeding this year to her clients in a multi-county area. It has always been a goal of WIC to increase breastfeeding, but this past year, the Barton County Health Department was awarded a grant to conduct a media campaign to help build awareness among the community as a whole.
As of Wednesday, Aug. 22, there were 15 confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in the state, but the numbers are on the rise. While the Barton County Health Department said there have been no confirmed cases of the disease within the county at this time, and none are being investigated, one case so far was reported in neighboring Stafford County earlier in August. In just two years, Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington has seen a 17 percent increase in the need for physical therapy services, according to hospital foundation spokesperson Michelle Moshier. Two factors have driven this--the addition of orthopedic services and an aging population. Thursday, the hospital will hold an open house so the public can see their answer to this need.

BROWNELL - A Utica man died Tuesday evening after the 2004 GMC Envoy he was driving went off a Ness County Road for unknown reason. Joshua W. Young, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene.
