The Ellinwood Fire Department hosted an area-wide firefighters conference on Rapid Intervention Techniques to rescue trapped firefighters on Monday night at St. Joseph Parish Hall in Ellinwood.

A local program that helps get senior citizens to out-of-town doctor appointments will get almost $6,000 in county funding, the Barton County Commission decided this week.
Local officials are being encouraged to "work with" ATV riders in their recreational use of the local flood control levee system, but they were also warned that if damage to the levees continues unabated, it could end up costing many local residents - and costing them a lot, whether they enjoy ATV riding or not.

The Barton County Fair Board and its Barbecue Committee have invited cookers from across the nation to bring the heat to cold central Kansas for the third-annual Winter Q barbecue cookoff. The event is set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Expo Complex west of Great Bend.

Students across the state are studying word lists as they prepare for the Great Bend Tribune's Sunflower Spelling Bee on March 12. But in order to compete in that regional qualifier for the Scripps National Spelling Bee, student must first win county championships. Barton County students will get that chance this Saturday, said Paul Snapp, with the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis.
There are still a few days left for those who want to vote in the coming local election to register to vote, according to information from County Clerk Donna Zimmerman.
State health and safety officials want fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in every home in Kansas and a grant recently received by the Great Bend Fire Department will help local firefighters do their part.

The United Way of Central Kansas held its 2015 Campaign kick-off on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Great Bend. With the theme "Lights, Camera, United Way in Action," there was a old Hollywood feek to the event.
Wilson Reservoir, about an hour north of Great Bend, attracts 'staycationers' for miles in every direction to camp and play along the shores of its clear water, and to enjoy boating, water skiing, and fishing. But ongoing drought has led to lower water levels which have some residents and visitors concerned.

WICHITA (AP) - American State Bancshares, a bank holding company, plans to move its headquarters from Great Bend to Wichita.
The bright yellow school buses in front of Great Bend's Walmart and 10th Street Dillons store Wednesday weren't carrying children. Rather, they were part of the United Way of Central Kansas Stuff the Bus project. Shoppers were invited to drop off items from the "wish lists" of the 19 United Way agencies in Barton and Pawnee counties.
