Cuts threaten to close doors on business coaching program

For 10 years, the Prairie Enterprise Project has been offering free and confidential business coaching to entrepreneurs in Barton, Russell, and Edwards counties. Karmi Green, the non-profit organization's Enterprise Facilitator, has helped business start-ups get off to a good start and helped tweak existing businesses, bringing and helping to retain jobs and tax dollars to the towns and counties where they locate. Sadly, unless it can secure new funding, the project will have no choice but to close its doors. Back for the third year, the Gun and Knife Show drew a crowd Saturday at the Great Bend Expo. Anthony Lutz, a promoter for event sponsor U.S. Weapons, based in Manchester, Iowa, said they've seen a spike in attendance at their shows in recent months.

Two Great Bend men seriously hurt in Scottsdale accident

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Two Great Bend men in Scottsdale, Ariz., for the Fiesta Bowl were seriously injured early Friday morning when the pedicab they were riding in was struck by a car, the Scottsdale police department reported.

Economic development projects on council agenda

The Great Bend City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the City Office, 1209 Williams. The agenda includes plans for the construction of an apartment complex using housing tax credits, a public hearing regarding industrial revenue bonds and property tax abatements for Great Bend Regional Hospital to construct a medical office building, property tax exemption for economic development purposes for Fuller Industries, a petition for the creation of a community improvement district for Golden Belt Cinema 6 and an update on the Great Bend Convention Center.

Hoisington woman injured in vehicle crash

BARTON COUNTY - About two miles east of Great Bend in the 300 block of East Barton County Rd., Dianna L. Werick of Hoisington was eastbound at 8:40 a.m. on Saturday. She lost control of the vehicle and it left the roadway, went through the south ditch and struck a tree, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol Crash Log.

Trees accepted at compost site

Great Bend residents looking for a place to dispose of Christmas trees can use the city compost site, but they need to remove all tinsel, hooks and decorations, said Street Superintendent Mike Crawford. If the tree is in a bag, the bag also needs to be removed.
