WIC dietician works to promote breastfeeding

Beverly Frizell, RD with the Barton County WIC program has been working extra hard to get the word out about the importance of breastfeeding this year to her clients in a multi-county area. It has always been a goal of WIC to increase breastfeeding, but this past year, the Barton County Health Department was awarded a grant to conduct a media campaign to help build awareness among the community as a whole.

Barton County avoids the bite so far

As of Wednesday, Aug. 22, there were 15 confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in the state, but the numbers are on the rise. While the Barton County Health Department said there have been no confirmed cases of the disease within the county at this time, and none are being investigated, one case so far was reported in neighboring Stafford County earlier in August. But Sedgwick County has had the highest number of confirmed cases so far. According to the Sedgwick County Health Department, they've seen unusually high numbers of the virus. Cub Scout Roundup scheduled

Byways tell the stories of Kansas

Ten years ago, Houston-based consultant Ted Eubanks helped create the nature-tourism strategy for Great Bend that culminated in the Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway designation and building the Kansas Wetlands Education Center on K-156. Now Eubanks, through his company Fermata Inc., has been hired to develop "interpretive plans" for each of the 11 Kansas scenic byways.

St. Mark Lutheran Church to host e-recycle collection

St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend will accept out-dated and broken electronic items for recycling from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 30. The church is located at 21st and Jackson St. This project is being done in cooperation with the Barton County Landfill, which also accepts "e-waste."
