The Ellinwood Fire Department hosted an area-wide firefighters conference on Rapid Intervention Techniques to rescue trapped firefighters on Monday night at St. Joseph Parish Hall in Ellinwood.

A local program that helps get senior citizens to out-of-town doctor appointments will get almost $6,000 in county funding, the Barton County Commission decided this week.
Local officials are being encouraged to "work with" ATV riders in their recreational use of the local flood control levee system, but they were also warned that if damage to the levees continues unabated, it could end up costing many local residents - and costing them a lot, whether they enjoy ATV riding or not.

WICHITA (AP) - American State Bancshares, a bank holding company, plans to move its headquarters from Great Bend to Wichita.

USD 431 Hoisington School District has received two grants for a Walking School Bus that begins this fall, from Oct. 1-Nov. 14. A Walking School Bus, where a parent volunteers walk with the kids to school, is one of the latest initiatives to get kids outside and combat obesity.

This weekend, racers from all over the region will be bearing down on Great Bend for an event that ties together three big races at the SRCA dragstrip west of town.
The Barton County Sheriff's Office along with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will host a hunter safety class Sept. 6 and 7 at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, 592 NE K-156.
The goal for the 2014 Relay for Life of Barton County was $104,000. All the money has now been turned in and the annual cancer-fighting fundraiser fell a little short, netting $92,000.
