Hoisington City Council to partner with Commission on Aging

Hoisington City Council members considered options of what to do with the restroom structure at Pride Park two weeks ago. They either needed to be razed or refurbished, after a proposed Eagle Scout project fell through. The council asked City Manager Jonathan Mitchell to approach the Commission on Aging, the group that operates the Friendship House located at the park, about a solution. Monday night, Mitchell reported back to the council.

No silence

About 35 Great Bend High School students stood across the street from the front entrance of their school around 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. They were continuing a protest that began on Monday afternoon following a press conference held by the Unified School District 428 administration at the district office.

Hoisington City Council considering new ambulances

Prior to the Hoisington City Council meeting Monday night, council members arrived early to inspect and compare the merits of three different ambulances that the EMS Director Scott Fleming arranged to have available. They included one owned by the City of Hoisington, a 2013 Osage provided by Great Bend EMS, and a 2015 AEM. Fleming is also considering a model by Lifeline, but was unable to have one available Monday night for the inspection.

Two Kansas men die in plane crash

WELD COUNTY, Colo. - Two leaders of the Great Bend Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who died in a plane crash Tuesday are being remembered as servants of the Lord.

NASA offical to speak at Jack Kilby Science Day

An official from NASA will be the keynote speaker at the 12th annual Jack Kilby Science Day. The public is invited to attend as Raphael Grau, acting manager of external integration for the International Space Station Program, addresses area high school students. His talk will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Fine Arts Building at Barton Community College.

ART ON FIRE

Barton Community College will host an opening reception for its new exhibit "Fire," by Cheyenne artist Bently Spang, from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 in the Shafer Art Gallery. The exhibit will run through Nov. 6.

Car Crush

Saturday, whether they fancied vintage, classic, muscle, or "rat rods," car lovers found plenty to appreciate as they converged on Great Bend's Party in the Park car show. This year, the number of cars increased nearly 50 percent over last year's event. 142 cars were on display, up from 93 the year before. Several factors were at play, and the appearance of reality television show 'Street Rodding American Style,' with hosts David Wolfe and Cy McCormack on location to interview three car owners about their rides for an upcoming show didn't hurt.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes a revised Juvenile Services Department budget, and updates on the road sealing program and the Appraiser's Office property re-inspection.
