Former Honor Flight program director to stand trial
A jury will try LaVeta Miller, the Great Bend woman charged with stealing more than $100,000 from the area Honor Flights program. As Miller stood beside him, her attorney entered a plea of not guilty on her behalf Thursday on two counts of theft by deception. Ellinwood attorney Richard Anderson waived the reading of the charges during Miller's arraignment, which followed the conclusion of her preliminary hearing. “Drones” give birds eye view, make fast work for ag apps

A sheet of ice greeted the opening of the second-annual Great Bend Farm and Ranch Expo Wednesday morning and one could see the breath of those gathered in the chilly Expo III building at the Expo Complex for the show's ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Recreation Commission purchases Imagination Playground
The Great Bend Recreation is buying an Imagination Playground. Director Diann Henderson got approval Monday from the GBRC Board to purchase more than 300 of the large blue building blocks and storage containers, at a cost of $19,219. By placing the order immediately, Henderson hopes Great Bend's Imagination Playground can arrive in time for the June Jaunt and other community events. Three mayors from Barton County recognized the local Action AmeriCorps and Senior Corps volunteers with a proclamation Tuesday, marking the first-ever Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service.
Pinewood Derby races to the finish

Election results finalized
The Barton County Commission met early Monday morning as the Board of Canvasers to canvas the results of last Tuesday's general election. The totals reported as of the end of the evening on election night remained unofficials until this was done.

New attorney appointed to Chapman
The jury trial for Jeffrey Wade Chapman that was scheduled to get under way on Monday has been rescheduled for August in Barton County District Court. Chapman is charged with first degree murder in the death of Damon Leslie Galyardt, who was killed Nov. 11, 2011.
GOING WITH THE FLOW
Starting today, a stretch of West Barton County Road will be reduced from four lanes to two as crews begin to bury a concrete pipe beneath it. The work is part of a nine-month, $6 million project to improve the flow of water from the Arkansas River to Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area.

Library Week will be one for the books
Local children's authors Gina Cook and Tami Dykes will visit Great Bend Public Library during National Library Week, April 14-20. Other events include the semiannual food-for-fines drive, a computer class and three free movie events for the public, said Jennifer King, Young Adult/marketing librarian. RSVP selling flowers for Memorial Day
This week marks the fourth-annual Senior Corps Week, an opportunity to thank Senior Corps volunteers for their service, said Donna Baugh, Volunteers in Action director. One way folks can become involved is by purchasing their Memorial Day flowers from the Retired Senior Volunteer Program this year. The flowers are on display at the RSVP office, 1025 Main, room D114 in Great Bend, and at the RSVP Thrift Store at 158 S. Main in Hoisington.
