Children can hear a story with an animal theme and then meet one of the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo animals at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the zoo. Sarah Cruz, education director at the zoo, said her new "Animal Tails" program is free and is suitable for preschoolers.

Gas prices headed upwards

In the past 24 hours, the national average price of gasoline has increased by 5 cents per gallon from $2.06 to $2.11, a jump that has been in the works for a few days, according to Gasbuddy.com.

Crime Stoppers seeks information on burglary

A burglary Sunday in Great Bend resulted in damage to an unoccupied residence at 2814 23rd St. and the loss of several items. Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir, speaking for Crime Stoppers, noted that a .22 rifle was stolen. Total loss was estimated at $500.

Trailer fire

This mobile home at 305 Maple St. was in flames when the Great Bend Fire Department arrived at 4:08 a.m. Wednesday. Chief Mike Napolitano said the fire was being investigated with assistance from the Great Bend Police Department and the State Fire Marshal's Office.
