Fireworks, Finally, but not for individuals

As if the Bikes, Bombers and Butterflies weekend in Great Bend wasn't already jam-packed full of activity, Great Bend Fire Chief Mike Napolitano has given the green light for the city fireworks display on Saturday night, Sept. 22 at the airport. The show begins a half-hour after sundown, immediately following the POW MIA ceremony which starts at 7 p.m. as part of the Great Bend Airport Airfest.

Double homicide remains unsolved

It's been nearly 10 years since two Great Bend women were found murdered in the Dolly Madison bakery outlet store at 1004 Harrison St. Store employee Mandi Alexander, 24, and customer Mary Drake, 79, were killed on Sept. 4, 2002, and the crime remains unsolved.

A 20-year-old man told Great Bend police he was battered by someone carrying a knife, around 9:46 p.m. Friday in the area of 19th and Holland St. He did not know the subject. An aggravated battery case was taken.
