The City of Great Bend's arrangement with the owners of the Highland Hotel to manage the city-owned convention center will remain in place, at least through the end of September, the City Council decided Monday night.
Award-winning Kansas City broadcast news anchor John Holt will emcee the Jack Kilby sculpture unveiling ceremony on Saturday, April 28. A native of Great Bend, Holt returns to his hometown for the ceremony, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in the courthouse square in downtown Great Bend.
When the Great Bend City Council meets Monday night, it will take up an issue months in the making. It's an issue that drew two petitions from residents in the southeast part of town and may force two council members to recuse themselves from voting.
HOISINGTON - Hoisington residents will soon have new, improved city sidewalks for walking or strolling through the Safe Routes to School Plan, which the city council approved at its regular meeting on Monday. The SRTS provides $250,000 in grant money to improve sidewalks and provide ADA sidewalk ramps.
Barton Community College will implement changes to its Medical Assistant and Medical Coding programs starting in the fall of 2012, administrators said recently. The staff will follow statewide "alignment" of course content that was approved last year by the Kansas Board of Regents. The college plans to allow students in either program to work toward a certificate, requiring a minimum 45 credit hours, or a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree, requiring 63 or more credit hours.
Average retail gasoline prices in Kansas have risen 5.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.42 per gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 1,329 gas outlets in Kansas. This compares with the national average that has increased 4.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.66.
Baseball and softball practices have started, members of the Great Bend Recreation Commission's board of directors were told Monday. The board meeting included pay raises for full-time employees and discussion on a master plan for the playground at the Great Bend Activity Center.
Great Bend police received reports of criminal damage to property at two locations on Saturday morning. Someone threw paint on the side of the house at 1208 Morphy St., and someone spray painted the Funtime Bingo building at 2805 Ninth St.
A 20-year-old man told Great Bend police he was battered by someone carrying a knife, around 9:46 p.m. Friday in the area of 19th and Holland St. He did not know the subject. An aggravated battery case was taken.
