Each year scientists capture and place bands on over a million birds across North America. Several types of bands are used, but the most common ones are small aluminum leg bands which are stamped with a unique number and other information for reporting a band that is found.

The Mississippi Kites are here! These beautiful birds get a lot of bad press and pressure because they are one of the most territorial birds in our area. Their big mistake is that they assume humans are a threat to their nests or kids. They dive bomb people with a lot of energy and actually will touch a hat or someone's hair or scalp when they ride by on a bike or walk in the area. Summer is here and there is a great opportunity for some fun learning across Barton County. The idea for StoryWalk was shared at an Extension update last August and several of my colleagues in surrounding counties wanted to bring it to this area. A small grant provided funds to purchase the materials for StoryWalk and now we are ready to take it on the road.
4-H'ers are busy getting their clothing projects ready for the upcoming 2016 Barton County Fair! It is exciting to watch the enthusiasm among the first year seamstresses. Monthly sessions of "Second Saturday Sewing" and a couple of sewing opportunities during spring break have been the catalyst to keep interest in sewing high.
People have been sending "messages" with flowers for centuries, with each flower species holding a meaning, but what are flowers really telling us? Discover hidden messages and more about flowers during the program, The Language of Flowers, at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, from 2 to 3 p.m. on June 19.
During a program the other day, a question that made me pause. "How do you get these owl and hawk mounts if it's illegal to shoot them?" a student asked, after I had told him his family couldn't shoot the great horned owl that was preying on their cats. A valid question.

Picnic season is upon us. The end of the school year and the Memorial Day holiday are celebrated with outdoor gatherings. As temperatures soar, so do the risks of bacteria on food increasing and causing a food borne illness. Family gatherings are the time to be diligent about serving safe food. Some great reminders at this time of year may help keep your picnic safe.
"Mom, I'm Hungry!" When you hear this and it is not meal time, you know it is time for a snack. Small children need snacks to help them make it from meal to meal. But snacks don't mean we throw good nutrition out the window. Your child's snacking mood may vary, but you can always maintain healthy snacking habits.
I think that we don't think enough about the impact of our Wetlands on the big picture of birding and hunting in our area. In the past month, I have had turkey hunters from Canada (efficiently shooting traditional archery) and a new birding friend from Wisconsin who called KWEC and requested taxi service for a day of birding after completing a day of business in our community. As we get deeper into spring, our attention will likely turn to making our lawns and gardens look their best. Anyone who has done yard work probably knows that a well-manicured, green lawn is not going to happen by itself. Luckily, Raymond Cloyd, professor of entomology at Kansas State University, has helpful tips for properly managing home lawns and gardens, particularly when it comes to controlling insects and other lawn-dwelling creatures.
With the first 8 week session of the Stay Strong, Stay Healthy workshop in the books it is time to sign up for session number 2. I have loved every Tuesday and Thursday morning as our group of seventeen gained strength and improved balance through the one hour exercise routine. It is definitely a slow progression, with wrist and ankle weights added only after the first three weeks. Repetitions increase slowly as well so that participants feel good about their accomplishments.
After nearly twenty-seven years of writing regular columns about pertinent information for families, it is time to look for some new and fresh ideas.
