"It goes so fast," the lady said to me, smiling with squinted eyes. She was every bit in her 70s, and she glanced at the boys as they grabbed at the candy near the checkout line. That was 19 years ago. Four kids under 6, I nodded back and couldn't imagine a time when they would be adults. Later, others repeated those words to me. "Before you know it, they are in college!" And then that day arrived for our oldest, six years ago.

Linn Hogg joined the Volunteers in Action team on March 1 and has really hit the ground running. She has developed several projects utilizing young people for April, beginning with the food drive "Check Out Hunger" held on April 6 with RSVP volunteers, 6th graders from Holy Family School in Great Bend, Brownies and Girl Scouts. This inter-generational project benefits the Community Food Bank of Barton County which has already served 1,700 Barton County residents since January 2013; 44% of those served are children. 6,705 Barton County residents were served in all of 2012.

Well, my first week at Barton County Research and Extension has definitely has not been boring to say the least! I have hit the ground running and am learning something new every day. I have had several subjects brought to me, but one that has been talked about several times is boring insects in trees. This made me curious on why I would hear about this problem so much in a week's time, so I set out to do some research to see what I could dig up.

We are proud to announce that Linn Hogg has been selected as Volunteer Coordinator for Volunteer Connections. In this position, Linn will be working with volunteers from school age children to college students to young adults, in fact, anyone under the age of 55. Linn brings great enthusiasm as well as wonderful experience working with the Relay for Life, Barton Community Concerts and other community volunteer efforts. All of us at RSVP are looking forward to this expansion into a full volunteer center and to working with Linn.

National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The theme for 2015 is "Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle" which encourages everyone to adopt eating and physical activity plans that are focused on consuming fewer calories, making informed food choices and getting daily exercise in order to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of chronic disease and promote overall health.
