Food Allergy Facts of Life

Living with food allergies is challenging, requiring adults to manage their health and avoid trigger foods, and parents to recognize symptoms and find helpful resources and professionals. It also means finding ways to manage you or your child's health and well-being without hardship, stress or illness. Learning to recognize a food allergy or food sensitivity is as important as learning how to live with it.

Saying goodbye

Saying "good bye" to a loved one is always hard so when Margaret Krug lost her fight with cancer on New Year's Day we felt so sad. Yet on Sunday and Monday when her family and friends gathered to celebrate her life we felt strength and healing return to our hearts. Our mother, grandmother, great grandma, mother-in-law, sister and friend was known affectionately as a bag lady in the Hoisington community. For twenty plus years she had walked the streets of town picking up aluminum cans to donate to the Kans for Kids cause. Five hundred cans per month ...

Gifts for the New Year

The gift giving season does not need to end with the Christmas season. There are gifts that we can give our children every day of their lives. These are gifts that cannot be bought, but come from the heart.

Spread Joy, Not Germs During the Holiday Season

Those flu bugs are nasty this year, and with so many families spending time together over the holidays, it is likely that you or someone close to you will catch it. The information that crosses my desk about avoiding contagious illnesses is consistent. WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN. Washing your hands at every step in the food preparation process will certainly help from spreading those germs. Whenever you touch your face or hair, or after sneezing or coughing into your hand you will want to wash. Reminding children to wash up after they have been playing outside, or with the family ...

Homemade Holiday Giving

Christmas did not begin as a commercialized holiday, but you would probably agree that it has become one. We can emphasize the spirit of Christmas to our children by giving gifts that we make, and encourage them to make gifts for others. The planning that goes into the gifts is half the fun. It's fun to see my five year old granddaughter, Calyn, enjoying the bright pink scarf I knitted for her last year. Now I am busily working on a turquoise colored one for little sister, Camdyn. I also decided last month to use fabrics from my stash ...

Who Knows What????

Harvest is here. Combines, trucks, chaff and grain. Kansas big heart is beating in the hot sun and wind. The heritage of history to support our families and validate the wisdom of our forefathers who risked everything to come here is palpable and visible in the faces of our farmers. It is religious to watch this process draw families, neighbors, custom-cutting visitors and friends together to process the harvest. It was nail-biting to get the rain and risk not getting into the fields in time. Kansas seems to grin at that possibility and solved the problem with 100 degrees and ...

Barton County Fair

Next week marks the beginning of my 26th year as your Barton County Family and Consumer Science Agent. The old adage "Time flies when you are having fun" is definitely true. It does not seem like a year has passed since I was ordering bread for the 4-H barbecue or lining up roasters for preparing the baked beans. Hopefully you have connected with a 4-H member to purchase your barbecue ticket. Prices do increase after July 1st.

Celebrating Dads on Father’s Day

I hope that your family takes time to celebrate with dad on his special day. Not a day goes by that I don't think of my own father. Even though he's been gone nearly 10 years I appreciate the role model he was to our family. A hard working farmer, he was totally outnumbered with a wife and three daughters. He taught us a lot of things and provided opportunities for us to attend college. He even took the time to be a 4-H community club leader for many years. He was a wonderful caregiver to my mother ...

There’s nothing like a vole-filled yard to put a DIY guy up on a ladder

A long time ago, I was a "do it yourself" guy. All that changed in roughly December 1991. I remember it well.
