Batman graduates from basic military training
Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Jordan R. Batman graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

This has been a tough week. The reality of damage and loss of life from storms hit too close to home. Last summer our Extension intern was Kristin Gleason. Tuesday, she lost her mother, Linda, and brother, Jeffrey, in the tragic storm related accident south of Great Bend. Kristin is healing from her injuries but our hearts go out to her and her dad, Jim, as they deal with their loss.
Food Safety is always important
With warmer weather here to stay and the number of family gatherings increasing it seems appropriate to bring some food safety reminders to you today. Whether it is an impromptu picnic or a planned family outing, nothing can spoil the moment quicker than someone becoming ill from food that is not prepared carefully or held at a safe temperature.

Dust off those helmets and start pedaling
Our friends from other states tease us "flatlanders" about riding our bike in Kansas. Obviously they have never traveled to the northwest part of Barton county and other parts of the state. I also like to point out that we may not have a lot of hills but we have lots of wind! This spring has been full of windy days so we plan our rides to head in to the wind first and then enjoy a tailwind on the way home.

Happy May Day! I hope you are able to enjoy the sights and sounds of spring in the days ahead. Even though I did not inherit the green thumb both my grandmothers and my mother had, I have a love of beautiful flowers and foliage plants. I try not to get too anxious to get my plants before it has warmed up to stay. The trick in central Kansas seems to be the placement of plants so they can withstand dry and windy conditions!

Tractor safety class approaching fast
The Tractor Safety Course for Barton County youth age 13-18 will be held Saturday, April 30, from 8 am to 5 pm at Barton Community College CNH Training Facility. Pre-registration is required, so please stop by the Barton County Extension Office, 1800 12th Street (on the corner of 12th and Baker Streets) to enroll, pay the fee and pickup your notebook. The cost of the class is $15 and registration is requested by April 26.

Army National Guard Pvt. Tyler J. Brough has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training.
Barton County to host state shoot
Barton County 4-H will be host to the State 4-H Shooting Sports competition Saturday, April 16, at the Expo grounds west of Great Bend. The disciplines included in this competition are Air Rifle, Air Pistol and BB gun. There are over 250 4-H members age 9 -18 years old registered for the event.

The Barton County team of Ryan Kohman, Parker Smith, Katelyn Reh and Lake Lyman placed 2nd in the state at the recent State 4-H Air Rifle Competition. The 4-H Shooting Sports Program uses the skills and disciplines of shooting to assist young people and their leaders to attain knowledge and develop essential life skills.

Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms out there! The month of May has arrived and that means a frenzy of activity for families who are celebrating Mother's day today and graduations now or in the weeks ahead. I am truly blessed to have my mother-in-law, daughter, and granddaughters close by. It is a joy to spend time together at a moment's notice. Hopefully your weekend plans include some good family time with plenty of hugs.
“Celebrate Wheat” Quilt Block Challenge announced
The theme for the 2013 Barton County Fair quilt block challenge is "Celebrate Wheat." Coordinated by members of the Central Kansas Thread Benders quilt guild, the contest is open to anyone who sews. Volunteers in Action News
The "Check Out Hunger" food drive for the Community Food Bank of Barton County was a huge success. RSVP volunteers partnered with 6th grade students from Holy Family School, a local Brownie troop, and Barton County Youth Care manned tables at Dillon's on 10th Street and Walmart on Saturday, April 6th. Persons entering the stores received a handout about the Community Food Bank with a grocery list of needed items. The volunteers collected 1,749 lbs ...
