Many times ethnic foods are popular choices because of their spiciness. Our "south of the border friends" have a knack for incorporating chili peppers and turmeric in their dishes. Indian cuisine includes the use of curry and Asian dishes are often sprinkled with ginger juice or soy sauce. Herbs and spices have been used for centuries to season and flavor foods. In prehistoric times, people discovered that certain parts of plants made food taste better. ...
Nothing gives me more pleasure than spending time with my three year old granddaughter, Calyn. Since she accompanied her parents to Washington D.C. over spring break I made sure we got some quality time together before she left. When she comes to spend the night I'm reminded about how curious she can be. Children should be curious, but curiosity can turn dangerous if kids are getting under the kitchen sink or into the medicine cabinet ...

With the cost of food taking a sizable portion of our spendable income, what can we do to make meal planning fun ...

These days no one goes anywhere without a driver's license. Forget just the airport - today you need an ID to buy a beer or even use your credit card. And it doesn't matter that you are closer to 80 than 21. Getting carded by bartenders has gone from flattery to annoyance. And it continues. But the driver's license, of course, contains more than just proof of your DOB. There's a photo too. A postage ...

Teenagers have their own misery index, but theirs has nothing to do with the Consumer Price Index. Instead, it has everything to do with parents who ruin their lives - or at least a couple minutes of them, which in their world is an eternity. These days it seems that's my specialty - bringing parental ...
The day after Christmas is one of my favorite days of the year. No, it is not because of the highly touted after Christmas sales. It is because 33 years ago today I was married to John Krug. We had a simple wedding; I made my dress and we bought John a new suit. My sister, Delma, and John's brother, Phil, completed our wedding party. My cousin played the organ and the pastor's wife sang ...
