As National Nutrition Month comes to an end for another year I hope you and your family have found ways to add more color to your meals. Boring insects

Well, my first week at Barton County Research and Extension has definitely has not been boring to say the least! I have hit the ground running and am learning something new every day. I have had several subjects brought to me, but one that has been talked about several times is boring insects in trees. This made me curious on why I would hear about this problem so much in a week's time, so I set out to do some research to see what I could dig up.

Every airman has a story

On a base of nearly 6,000 active-duty members, an Airman's story can get lost in the mix or doesn't usually make it past the walls of their own shop or unit. However, an inspiring story can be found in one of Dyess' smallest shops, about one of its newest Airmen.

A journey to the center of my soul

His photo hung on the brick wall above the front door of St. Patrick's Grade School. Sporting a red beanie, resting on what seemed to be a disproportionately small head, with a serious, reflective expression. It was easy to brush by his glare. Typically we exchanged glances while I was on my way to recess and had other priorities -- like pulling Mary Lou Marmie's pony tails, for instance. Still, that photo of Pope Paul IV became a part of my consciousness. He was, afterall, the direct successor of St. Peter, the rock on whom Jesus built "the church ...

Who am I to tell the snow where to lie?

In January, 2010, the snow started and didn't stop. And as our driveway became rather clogged with white stuff, the marital tension grew. So I solved the problem. I wrote a column on it. It became one of the most popular columns I ever wrote.

Emotional appetite

Since we were snowed in Thursday and Friday, I was not able to share the educational program titled, "Emotional Appetite: The Food and Mood Connection" so I will emphasize the important points in my column. There is no doubt that your mood has a lot to do with many of the foods you crave when you are not physically hungry. Eating to feed an emotion instead of physical hunger is considered emotional eating. Stress, depression, loneliness, frustration, anxiety, and anger are just a few emotions that can trigger cravings. Although boredom and procrastination are not necessarily considered emotions, they are ...

The Ten Commandments of Coaching a Girl’s Team

This year I'm enjoying a first - coaching a girl's sport, basketball. A team made up of Notre Dame de Sion juniors in the CYO league, it's a rather unusual arrangement as most coaches do things I don't. Practice, for instance. They also use those white boards to diagram plays, make strategic substitutions and scout their opponents. That's not me, not us.

February is Heart Health Month

February may be the shortest month of the year but it is an especially good time to recognize the importance of making lifestyle changes related to heart health. Is it true that you are what you eat? When it comes to heart health, the answer is a resounding "Yes!" Eating the right way is not about dieting, which is really a temporary change in your eating habits to lose a few pounds; it is about making better choices every day so that they become second nature.

Shoveling snow? Uh no thanks.

From time to time, my wife tells me I'm not like most other husbands. Some men, she points out, know how to do things like use a hammer, work a saw and build things around the house. I've explained that I've built stuff. In fourth grade I built a birdhouse in Cub Scouts.

Extension Programs Focus on Health and Wellness

It is fairly common that my educational programs and workshops emphasize a common theme of health and wellness. The annual Walk Kansas program is just around the corner, so it is time to start rounding up your team members for that successful program. Packets are ready for team captains to pick up at our office and the Great Bend Recreation Commission. I also plan to deliver some packets to the recreation commissions in Hoisington and Ellinwood.
