RSVP column

RSVP wants to thank all of Santa's helpers that made lap robes for residents of the Barton County assisted living and nursing facilities during the past year. RSVP delivered 84 lap robes to three nursing facilities and four assisted living facilities for residents in need during the holiday season. This is more than we have ever delivered and it is all because of generous gifts of time and talent by a group of dedicated volunteers. You know who you are. Thank you so much!

New traditions, joyful and triumphant

There comes a time when your Christmas traditions need updating. Especially those revolving around toddlers believing a portly man draped in red polyester will enter your home while everyone sleeps. In our Leawood household, that time arrived a long time ago -seemingly when Nixon was President.

Replace Resolution with Action Plan this year

It isn't often that my New Year's column actually runs on the 1st, so I will take advantage of the opportunity to share a thought or two about plans for the New Year. No doubt you have been thinking about something you would like to resolve to do in the coming year. Many times resolutions focus on things like weight loss, getting out of debt, or breaking a bad habit. Research shows that success in ...

Columnist presents wish list

Dear Santa – It's been a long year since I last wrote. Here's my Christmas wish list: Let's begin with Christmas cards. I want just a few cards from a mother/daughter combination that don't beg the question … which one is the mom? Go ahead … return that Hollister tank top back to your daughter's closet. Plus those boots that were last worn by Pocahontas. I'd like a GPS for my car keys, wallet, TV ...

A Season of Blessings

For four years, I have proudly served on the Executive Board of K-State Research and Extension in and for Barton County. Until I became involved in this capacity, I was naïve and really had no idea how many people, young and not so young, were reached by the programming shared by our local Agents. I honestly had never given it a thought Of course, I had heard of 4-H as have most. I believed it was just for farm kids with calves and goats. Was I ever misinformed!

Keeping fit through the Holidays

We have entered the period of the year when spreads of rich holiday foods seem to appear at every social gathering – frosted cookies at the office, eggnog at your neighbor's, or chocolates in your Christmas stocking. All these extras add up, and if you are like most Americans, you will put on a pound or two by New Year's Day.

Poaching Veterans’ Pensions

Veterans and their families are a target for some dishonest advisers who are claiming to offer free help with paperwork for pension claims. The scheme involves attorneys, financial planners, and insurance agents trying to persuade veterans over 65 to make decisions about their pensions without giving them the whole truth about the long-term consequences
