Now that summer is here, we all look forward to home-grown vegetables and fruit from local growers. These fresh produce items are available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings on the library parking lot and on Thursday evenings during the Summer Street Stroll. Everyone loves fresh vegetables but sometimes the cost added on to regular grocery bills can be prohibitive. The Kansas Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program can be a solution. This is a new project that has been brought to our area through collaboration between Janel Rose, CDRR Program, Barton County Health Department and Janet Splitter, Executive Director, ElderCare and ...
With the weather heating up and the calendar turning to July it can only mean one thing – the Barton County Fair is coming! As I begin my 25th year with Barton County Extension I am seeing second generation 4-H'ers growing and learning through one of the best youth programs around. Kids who were active 4-H'ers in the 1990's now want their own children to gain from similar experiences. Fair time activities give youngsters a chance to showcase what they have learned from the 4-H projects they enrolled in last fall.
One of the hats I wear at Barton County Extension is to work with the Community Development committee to bring ideas to the table that help make our communities a great place to be. As my husband, John, and I returned home from the 2013 Biking Across Kansas event we reflected on the wonderful spirit and friendliness of each of the communities we passed through. From Johnson City to Galena, we enjoyed touring the southern part of Kansas at bicycle speed.
Veterans and their families are a target for some dishonest advisers who are claiming to offer free help with paperwork for pension claims. The scheme involves attorneys, financial planners, and insurance agents trying to persuade veterans over 65 to make decisions about their pensions without giving them the whole truth about the long-term consequences
Volunteers in Action/RSVP wants to thank everyone that purchased recycled Memorial Flowers from our Great Bend and Hoisington locations this year. Because of your support, we made over $1,500 which means that we will be able to say a proper "THANK YOU" to our volunteers for everything they do to make our communities a better place to live. If the winds and rain don't beat them up too much before next Monday, we have volunteers scheduled to help us pick up the abandoned flowers at the cemetery again this year. Don't forget: if you want to ...
May is both National High Blood Pressure Education Month and Stroke Awareness Month. It only makes sense to acknowledge both of these disease processes at the same time because when you control your blood pressure you greatly reduce your risk of stroke---which is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States.

Summer is almost here and that means kids will be eating more meals and snacks at home. Keeping those meals and snacks healthy over the summer can be easy with a little planning. Following the MyPlate food guide system for healthy eating tells us that half of your plate should be filled with fruits and vegetables. Another generous portion of whole grains and a small portion of lean protein round out the healthy plate.
The Barton County team of Ryan Kohman, Parker Smith, Katelyn Reh and Lake Lyman placed 2nd in the state at the recent State 4-H Air Rifle Competition. The 4-H Shooting Sports Program uses the skills and disciplines of shooting to assist young people and their leaders to attain knowledge and develop essential life skills.
Happy Mother's Day to all of the moms out there! The month of May has arrived and that means a frenzy of activity for families who are celebrating Mother's day today and graduations now or in the weeks ahead. I am truly blessed to have my mother-in-law, daughter, and granddaughters close by. It is a joy to spend time together at a moment's notice. Hopefully your weekend plans include some good family time with plenty of hugs.
