Extension to offer food safety training for volunteer groups

Food is a great way to bring people together, and selling food is often a key way for nonprofit groups to raise funds for their activities. However, cooking the large quantities of food required for events such as fundraiser dinners, concession stands, community meals, family reunions, or funeral dinners is different than cooking for a family.

The Mighty Mysterious White-tailed Buck

Three of my friends kill BIG deer almost every year. They are all bow hunters. It is amazing to me that they consistently kill deer 170 inches or better. Sometimes LOTS better-- and do it every year. Modest and quiet-- they seldom discuss or reveal what they do and how they do it. I know some of the places they hunt, and they are always in good spots. I know other skilled hunters in similar spots that haven't killed a big deer in 20 years. I personally am somewhere in between. I have tried to find the common denominator ...

Saving money

Where did the first three weeks of 2016 go? If you are like me, you are just now getting used to writing 2016 on letters and checks. Since it is still early in the year it seems like the perfect time to encourage putting some money away. A less than robust economy and daily news from the stock exchange makes everyone a bit cautious with their spending. When the family budget tightens savings may take a back seat. We often hear of people who are living pay check to pay check.

Surviving the Winter

I was driving to the grocery store last Wednesday and passed the high school football field about 4:00 in the afternoon. There were several kids playing ball with a skiff of snow on the ground. It occurred to me that some of the athletic success in Kansas might be predicated on the innate drive of our kids to get out and joyfully play in less than perfect weather conditions. I then thought that possibly the majority of all our outdoor activities happen in adverse conditions. My conclusion is that Kansas really does have some of the best people living ...

Simple Seasonal Meals

A food guide system, known as "MyPlate" was introduced more than 5 years ago. It is easy to relate to the plates of food we enjoy throughout our day. When we pay close attention to the food groups we are reminded that half the plate should be filled with vegetables and fruits. Another large portion of grains, (preferably whole) and a small portion of food containing protein complete our plate. A serving of calcium rich food should also be included several times per day.

Gun Safety Then and Now

I learned gun safety from my father. He loved to hunt quail and took me with him at every opportunity. At age 5 or 6, it was a BIG DEAL to get to go with him and watch the dogs and take quail home for my mother and grandmother to prepare for dinner or breakfast. I have never dined any better.

Setting The Blocks!

Hunting waterfowl is expensive, hard-work and frequently a miserable endeavor. I have been addicted to this "sport" for most of my life. I totally forget about the process when I am sitting in the blind or laying in the field with the sky full of motion and sound.
