The Walk Kansas program is in its 11th year. It has become a signature program for K-State Research and Extension with nearly 20,000 individuals participating last year. The Ellinwood Heritage Center and the Commission on Aging are long time partners of RSVP. The Ellinwood Heritage Senior Center was first conceived in 1981 by a group of concerned citizens of Ellinwood. Around that same time, the Bosse family decided they had no use for the building at 103 Main Street and donated the building for this use. Friday, Feb. 3, was a special day for a special lady. Long-time Barton County Extension home economist Mae Weaver celebrated her 90th birthday. Thousands of county residents have been touched by this lady at some point in their lives. As an advisor to the Homemaker Units, Mae brought a wide variety of educational programs to help families improve their quality of life. Mae especially liked researching topics related to history or cultural arts and then putting a slide set together to share with audiences across the county. As our college boys conclude their perpetual Christmas break (What's it been? Two months?), I offer 10 sure things with college kids and their phones.
"I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world." 4-H members across the nation repeat this pledge at the beginning of every meeting. The overall goal in 4-H is to "Make the Best Better." There are many activities and events that help our youth accomplish these goals.
I hope your year is off to a great start. In my New Years' Day column I invited you to develop an action plan for healthy living. If healthy eating and increasing physical activity is part of your action plan I have another suggestion. Consider signing up for the "Active Aging" workshop set to begin soon.
RSVP wants to thank all of Santa's helpers that made lap robes for residents of the Barton County assisted living and nursing facilities during the past year. RSVP delivered 84 lap robes to three nursing facilities and four assisted living facilities for residents in need during the holiday season. This is more than we have ever delivered and it is all because of generous gifts of time and talent by a group of dedicated volunteers. You know who you are. Thank you so much!

National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. The theme for 2015 is "Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle" which encourages everyone to adopt eating and physical activity plans that are focused on consuming fewer calories, making informed food choices and getting daily exercise in order to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of chronic disease and promote overall health.
Get a jump on the growing season by starting your favorite or hard to find plants indoors from seeds. Starting hard to find plants, like many of the heirloom or newly introduced varieties, from seed may be the only way you will be able to add these to your garden. Plus, you'll be extending the growing season and bringing the fun of gardening indoors.
