Healthy living more than a pledge

"I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world." 4-H members across the nation repeat this pledge at the beginning of every meeting. The overall goal in 4-H is to "Make the Best Better." There are many activities and events that help our youth accomplish these goals.

RSVP column

RSVP wants to thank all of Santa's helpers that made lap robes for residents of the Barton County assisted living and nursing facilities during the past year. RSVP delivered 84 lap robes to three nursing facilities and four assisted living facilities for residents in need during the holiday season. This is more than we have ever delivered and it is all because of generous gifts of time and talent by a group of dedicated volunteers. You know who you are. Thank you so much!

New traditions, joyful and triumphant

Replace Resolution with Action Plan this year

It isn't often that my New Year's column actually runs on the 1st, so I will take advantage of the opportunity to share a thought or two about plans for the New Year. No doubt you have been thinking about something you would like to resolve to do in the coming year. Many times resolutions focus on things like weight loss, getting out of debt, or breaking a bad habit. Research shows that success in achieving these resolutions is often low. In fact, studies show that after six months, fewer than half the people who make New Year ...

Merry Christmas from the extension staff

Each year at this time we like to reflect on the positive things that are happening at Barton County Extension. It is easy to get caught up in the media reports about the economic downturn, threats of terrorism, or chronic health issues that are plaguing our country. Build a healthy meal

As the final days of National Nutrition Month pass us by I want to give you some good reasons to choose to eat healthier. Whenever I present educational materials that promote health and wellness I start by asking participants if they think what they choose to eat affects their overall health? Nearly everyone thinks it matters, yet the reasons they give for not eating healthy abound. The USDA developed thirty-seven one page fact sheets as part of the 10 tips nutrition education series. Titles range from: "Kid-Friendly Veggies and Fruits," "Make better beverage choices," "Salt and Sodium," to "Eating Better ...

Walking School Bus is Getting Kids Excited

Over the weekend, my seven year old granddaughter, Calyn, excitedly told me, "Grandma, I'm going to join the Walking School Bus when it starts April 1st." "That's wonderful," I replied. It truly is wonderful to see two communities in Barton County, (both Great Bend and Hoisington) adopting this successful program and modeling it to other communities.
