Gordon Hibbard, president and chief executive officer of the Kansas 4-H Foundation, announced plans to retire from his position with the statewide non-profit organization.
I just noticed that the past week was designated as National Volunteer Week. What better time of year than this to say a big "Thank You" to the many volunteers who support our Extension programming efforts? I don't have to look far to see the volunteers who give freely of their time to help others. Just this week Joyce Esfeld, known for her bread making expertise, shared secrets to making that perfect pie crust with an enthusiastic audience. Last week, my husband, John, completed teaching the Kansans Optimizing Health workshop with me to residents in Hoisington. And twice this ...
An invitation to visit with a group of GBHS seniors enrolled in the nutrition and wellness class prompted me to revisit some good resources in my files. After my hour long presentation was completed I thought the information would be perfect to share in my weekly column space. No doubt you are noticing that food prices are gradually creeping up higher and higher each time you visit the store. The challenge continues to be, "How can I feed my family healthy food choices for less?"
When I opened the e-mail about an online course related to food marketing to youth, I thought it looked interesting. My schedule was full but at least with this on-line course I could work on it when I had the time. Having put the finishing touches on a new fact sheet addressing the obesity issue I hoped this course would reinforce my thinking about healthy food choices and give me some additional ideas of ways to impact healthy eating habits in others. Well, I was not disappointed.
The smoke swirls around the grill, and fills the crisp morning air with the welcoming aroma of breakfast sausage. This was the first thing to greet the 16 youth hunters, and their parents or sponsors. They showed up just as the sun was rising on the farm yard at Crosby's Wild Game Adventures west of Great Bend for the annual Pheasants Forever Rooster Booster Chapter #504 Youth Pheasant Hunt.

Is your house child proofed? We have a curious two year old granddaughter and in a few short months our youngest grandchild will be mobile, so that means we will need to child proof certain areas of our home. Children should be curious, but curiosity can turn dangerous if kids are getting under the kitchen sink or into the medicine cabinet where hazardous chemicals and adult medicines are kept. In recognition of National Poison Prevention Week, I want to use my column space today to remind you about storing hazardous materials out of a child's reach.
On Feb. 14, Cherry Village crowned Valentine Kings and Queens for each care unit.
Beans are a great source of carbohydrates and considered a "Powerhouse food." They have a nutrient profile so strong and versatile that they are considered to be both a vegetable and a protein food. Beans are loaded with fiber and help you feel full longer, and they stabilize blood sugar. Another plus for beans is they cost only pennies per serving.
The Kansas Association for Conservation and Environmental Education (KACEE) announced Thursday the recipients of the 2014 Excellence in Conservation and Environmental Education Awards. Among the winners was Pam Martin of the Kansas Wetland Education Center, Great Bend.
The definition of "Spring Fever" is: the lazy or restless feeling often associated with the onset of spring. I don't know about you, but I have a serious case of it. As I get older I find myself enjoying cold weather and icy conditions less and less. I used to say that I didn't mind a snow storm as long as the power stays on. I am rethinking that statement too. I know the crops need plenty of snow and temperatures that keep things dormant until the proper time. Even so, I look forward to the sunny and ...
Air Force Airman Christopher S. Collicott Jr. graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
Over the weekend, my seven year old granddaughter, Calyn, excitedly told me, "Grandma, I'm going to join the Walking School Bus when it starts April 1st." "That's wonderful," I replied. It truly is wonderful to see two communities in Barton County, (both Great Bend and Hoisington) adopting this successful program and modeling it to other communities.
Any divorced guy will tell you -- never ever insult the tulips.
