Marsh Musings

There are lots of white birds in our marsh. Whooping Cranes and pelicans have big white wings with black tips. Gulls and terns are mostly white birds. Great egrets, snowy egrets, and cattle egrets are white birds. Goldeneye, bufflehead, and common merganser ducks have mostly a white appearance. Snow geese are white birds. Hunters and birders identify and know these birds. The uncommon mistake of killing a Whooping Crane is not usually a failed identification but a bird in the sun or in a group of sandhill cranes that was unexpected. Young, over-eager hunters are prone to occasional errors in ...

Prepare for severe winter weather

The frigid temperatures last weekend were the first glimpse of winter in northwest Kansas. Should we fool ourselves that the worst is past and we're ready for spring? No! There are still a couple of months of winter yet to come.

Replace resolution with an action plan this year

It is that time of year that many people feel pressured to make a New Year's Resolution to improve their life. Several years ago I wrote an educational fact sheet titled, "Action Plan for Healthy Living." While you may have guessed, the information I shared in the publication emphasized healthy eating choices along with regular physical exercise. Today I want to highlight six additional strategies for achieving a healthy life.

Why duck hunters fail

All duck hunters fail some of the time. Some duck hunters fail a lot of the time. Since I seem to occupy a spot in the "frequent failure" category, I decided to precisely analyze the situation and try to put a few more birds in the sous vide which is my current favorite method of preparing ducks at the perfect temperature with perfect moisture and flavor. It is terrific for deer roast also.

Become a Master Gardener

Master Gardeners are active in Barton County and are hardworking, dedicated community members that strive to educate and beautify our communities through gardening. From time to time, a few of our Master Gardeners will write up a short column for me. I thought I would share a short piece from Ron Cunningham this week about beautifying your house with a few plants to help add a little color in the winter. Also, don't forget! If you are interested in becoming a Master Gardener, a class will be starting on Jan. 31, here in Great Bend. Fifteen applicants are needed ...

On the true meaning of Christmas

Our country, our culture, our world, is crammed full of holidays. The English word "holiday" originally came from the word "holy day" commemorating special events in the Christian calendar year. However, the definition now is "vacation," "leisure time for pleasure," most usually time away from work for that rest or pleasure.

Take time for family

Holidays are a great time of yea r to connect with family. It's easy to let schedules get too hectic so make sure you prioritize your family time this year. Recently my husband and I returned from a fun visit with our youngest son, Matt, in Florida. It was great to see him interact with his Extension co-workers and see that he is adjusting to his job, the traffic and warm temperatures. Daily trips to the beach during our visit were amazing.
