Pheasants Forever Youth Hunt

The smoke swirls around the grill, and fills the crisp morning air with the welcoming aroma of breakfast sausage. This was the first thing to greet the 16 youth hunters, and their parents or sponsors. They showed up just as the sun was rising on the farm yard at Crosby's Wild Game Adventures west of Great Bend for the annual Pheasants Forever Rooster Booster Chapter #504 Youth Pheasant Hunt.

Protect Children by Storing Poisons Safely

Is your house child proofed? We have a curious two year old granddaughter and in a few short months our youngest grandchild will be mobile, so that means we will need to child proof certain areas of our home. Children should be curious, but curiosity can turn dangerous if kids are getting under the kitchen sink or into the medicine cabinet where hazardous chemicals and adult medicines are kept. In recognition of National Poison Prevention Week, I want to use my column space today to remind you about storing hazardous materials out of a child's reach.

Eat More Beans for Good Health

Beans are a great source of carbohydrates and considered a "Powerhouse food." They have a nutrient profile so strong and versatile that they are considered to be both a vegetable and a protein food. Beans are loaded with fiber and help you feel full longer, and they stabilize blood sugar. Another plus for beans is they cost only pennies per serving.

Do you Have Spring Fever?

The definition of "Spring Fever" is: the lazy or restless feeling often associated with the onset of spring. I don't know about you, but I have a serious case of it. As I get older I find myself enjoying cold weather and icy conditions less and less. I used to say that I didn't mind a snow storm as long as the power stays on. I am rethinking that statement too. I know the crops need plenty of snow and temperatures that keep things dormant until the proper time. Even so, I look forward to the sunny and ...

February is Heart Health Month

February may be the shortest month of the year but it is an especially good time to recognize the importance of making lifestyle changes related to heart health. Is it true that you are what you eat? When it comes to heart health, the answer is a resounding "Yes!" Eating the right way is not about dieting, which is really a temporary change in your eating habits to lose a few pounds; it is about making better choices every day so that they become second nature.

Learn How to Use Credit Wisely

I remember as a kid growing up in a conservative Kansas farm family we always paid for our purchases with cash or a check. My first experience with establishing credit was to make three equal payments to the company I bought my new Singer sewing machine from. No interest was added; it was just a way to show responsibility to pay a bill in full. I still like to wait until I have the money in hand before making a sizable purchase. It just feels right.

Snow Days Make us Anxious for Spring

No doubt you have felt a little cabin fever during the past few days. Even though the moisture is needed by the farmers, the cold and icy conditions make me anxious for spring. Two weeks ago I met with the Walk KS committee for Barton County to review changes in this signature program sponsored by K-State Research and Extension the past 12 years. We came away from the meeting excited about the possibilities that lie ahead!
