Benefit dinner and dance
A benefit dinner and dance for Laura Brown, who was diagnosed with cancer, will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Elks Lodge, 1120 Kansas. A silent auction will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Proceeds will go to help pay medical expenses. BCC trustees preparing for contract renewals
The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will review management staff contracts and administrative contracts during the next board study session, at 4 p.m. Thursday in room F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. They will vote on renewals at the next business meeting.
Man battered at convenience store made multiple calls to police
A Great Bend man was allegedly battered by four other people, Saturday night or early Sunday at the Kwik Shop at 24th and Main. The Great Bend Police Department is investigating after viewing a surveillance video of the altercation. GBMS band concert
The Great Bend Middle School Band Department will be having their spring band concerts on Thursday at the Great Bend Middle School gym. The 7th Grade Band the GBMS Jazz Ensemble concert will begin at 6:45 p.m. The 8th Grade Band and the GBMS Jazz Ensemble concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public. The bands are directed by Kurtis Koch and assisted by Mark DeWald.

Students of the Barton Community College Dance Theatre class will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11 in the Fine Arts Auditorium and freewill donations will be accepted to benefit Barton baseball player Skylar Hill in his fight against cancer.

Library announces programs
Great Bend Public Library will show "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" during Teen Movie Monday, at 4 p.m. on May 13. The free movie is open to students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class from 2-3 p.m. on Thursday, May 16. The class will cover Beginner's Internet. Pre-registration is required. 281 Bypass Antiques, located at 1135 U.S. 281 Bypass in Great Bend, will host a reception for artist Dustin Poche from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday May 11.
Pork Association sponsoring blood drive
For the second year, the Kansas Pork Association is sponsoring several blood drives throughout Kansas with a goal of collecting 150 pints of blood. Because each pint could help save up to three lives, up to 450 patients could benefit.
BCC to host concert
The Barton Music Department awards 11 scholarships every year at about $1,000 each, and it couldn't be done without the help of the community's support of the annual Music Endowment Concert, which is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

Toy Train play days in Luray
The Tomy trains will roll again at the Stone Church in Luray this week-end. BCC to close for Memorial Day observance
The Barton Community College campus and Center for Adult Education will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. The college will resume regular summer hours on Tuesday, May 28.
Historical Village will be open Monday
The Barton County Historical Society Museum and Village will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Monday for Memorial Day. Executive Director Beverly Komarek noted the museum is usually closed on Mondays. "This special opening is to accommodate families and visitors here for the holiday." Regular admission will be charged. The historical society is located just south of the Arkansas River bridge in Great Bend on U.S. 281.
Three former inmates praised by Governor as they graduate from BCC
Graduation days are celebrations of hard work expended and the future opportunities that have been earned. They are a chance to look back on what it took to get there, as well as to look forward to what lies ahead. And many thanks are offered to those who helped along the way.

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will approve contracts for head coaches, management staff and administrative personnel when it meets at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. There will also be an executive session for discussion of personnel.
Free fishing Saturday at Kanopolis State Park
KANOPOLIS - The public is invited to take part in a short nature hike and free fishing this Saturday at Kanopolis State Park. Meet at the Wildlife Viewing Area west of the office at 9 a.m. and follow the park naturalist on the trail. Bring a fishing pole for fishing in the ponds after the hike.
Driver leaves ER after arrest
After a one-vehicle accident at 6:26 a.m. Sunday at U.S. 56, milepost 211, the driver was arrested by the Barton County Sheriff's Office on suspicion of driving under the influence. At the jail he requested medical assistance for shoulder pain. At 9:27 a.m., a Great Bend Police Officer responded to a disturbance at the Great Bend Regional Hospital Emergency Room, and the BCSO was called to assist. Colo. family injured on I-70
Several people from Colorado Springs, Colo., were injured at 6:10 p.m. Sunday in Russell County, when a Suburban pulling a camper-trailer attempted to pass a semi-trailer on Interstate 70, 1 mile east of Bunker Hill. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the vehicle became unstable as it passed the semi, entering the median. The driver over-corrected and the vehicle entered the ditch, rolling several times. The trailer broke free and landed upright, while the Suburban landed on its roof.
Fatality reported in Pratt County
A 2-year-old boy died Monday and others were injured in a one-vehicle accident in Pratt County. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred at 10:18 a.m.. on K-61, 1.5 miles north of Preston.
Library’s summer hours begin
The Great Bend Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27, in observance of Memorial Day. The library will also switch to summer hours on May 28. It will be open Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed Sundays through Labor Day.
Blood donors could win $1,000 gift card
WICHITA - Donors who present to give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards, the American Red Cross announced. In addition, their donations will honor those who gave their life for our country and support those in need of care. The Red Cross serves about 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including many Veterans Affairs medical centers.
GBHS cookbook now available
The Panther Paw Restaurant staff and management at Great Bend High School have produced a cookbook containing recipes of dishes served throughout the school year.
