Stop 'N Learn topic: Spring flowers
A free Stop 'N Learn program titled "Spring Flowers" will be offered at noon Wednesday at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Jerry Esfeld will talk about a variety of perennials and annuals available to plant in flower gardens this year. Topics will include selecting the perfect flowers, fertilizing, mulching and care, plus a question-and-answer time.
Softball, baseball rules on agenda
The Great Bend Recreation Commission board will continue its discussion on youth baseball and softball rules Monday. The board will meet at 4 p.m. at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. It is expected to vote on any rule changes for this summer's ball teams. Health insurance and workers compensation insurance are also listed as action items on the meeting agenda, along with an item labeled, "Imagination Playground."
Barton Community College invites community to celebrate Poetry Month
Barton Community College will celebrate Poetry month through April by offering community members a chance to share original poetry or to recite others poetry at live reading sessions from 12:15-12:45 p.m. on April 10, 17 and 24 in the Student Union as well as an opportunity to upload their own poetry to Barton's website.
Crime Stoppers offers reward for info on vandalism
Between 11 p.m. on March 28 and 2:51 a.m. on March 29, 11 mailboxes were destroyed. Five were at apartments at 2314 31st St., and six more were in the 2000 block of 32nd St. in Great Bend. Police Chief Dean Akings said each box was valued at $50, for a total loss of $550. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers, 792-1300 or 888-305-1300.
BCC orchestra to perform at Shafer Art Gallery
The Barton Community College Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at the Shafer Art Gallery. The theme for the concert is "Military Music for Orchestra" featuring works by Mozart, Haydn and Schubert. Other orchestral works include Mozart's "Symphony No. 15 in G Major" and an adaptation of Vivaldi's "Double Concerto for Two Violins in A Minor." Admission is free. A reception will follow the performance.
Community Choir and Barton Orchestra to present 'On Broadway'
The Central Kansas Community Choir accompanied by the Barton Community College Orchestra will present a concert themed "On Broadway" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 8, at First United Methodist Church, 2123 Forest Ave., Great Bend. The group will perform substantial medleys from popular Broadway titles such as "Les Miserables" and "The Lion King," as well as single selections from "Porgy and Bess," the "Wizard of Oz" and more.
BCC theater to perform Kansas history drama
Barton Community College's theater department will host "Kansas Drama" at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in the Community Room in the Learning Resource Center. Barton theater students will perform "Settling the Kansas Territory" from the "Shared Stories of the Civil War" reader's theater project.

New sculpture to be unveiled
A metal art sculpture at the Great Bend Sports Complex will be unveiled at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, as a kick-off for the first high school baseball game of the season. The public is invited.
Winners of Congressional High School Arts Competition to be announced Saturday

Cell phone distracts driver
Michael Pata, 18, Hoisington, received minor injuries Sunday night after rolling a Ford Expedition in the 600 block of NW 20 Ave. Barton County Sheriff's Office reports Pata was driving south at 11:40 p.m. when he was distracted by the use of a cellular phone and ran off the road into the west ditch. Library’s summer hours begin
The Great Bend Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27, in observance of Memorial Day. The library will also switch to summer hours on May 28. It will be open Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed Sundays through Labor Day.
Blood donors could win $1,000 gift card
WICHITA - Donors who present to give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards, the American Red Cross announced. In addition, their donations will honor those who gave their life for our country and support those in need of care. The Red Cross serves about 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including many Veterans Affairs medical centers.
GBHS cookbook now available
The Panther Paw Restaurant staff and management at Great Bend High School have produced a cookbook containing recipes of dishes served throughout the school year.

The Great Bend Recreation Commission, Commission on Aging and Barton County Farm Bureau will host a defensive driving course next week at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Classes run from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, May 20, and Tuesday, May 21.
Greyhounds are topic of free program
History buff Joe Boley will give a program on greyhound racing at 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Boley's free program explains how Great Bend is part of greyhound racing history.
Thieves steal large mower
A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.
No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month
The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).
Suspicious fire destroys trailer
PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. "The fire is suspicious in nature and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office was called," Bellendir said. ...
Library announces teen movie, free computer class
Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
