FOE rasing funds to relight neon eagle

The Fraternal Order of Eagles in Great Bend is rasing money to restore the neon eagle sign outside the FOE social room at 1024 Main. One fundraiser will be a dance from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, April 2, with The Country Plus Band playing. The suggested donation is $3 per person or $5 per couple.

American Legion gets into the swing of spring with supper

The Great Bend American Legion Post 180 is celebrating spring and the return of American Legion Baseball with an all you can eat supper from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the post, 1011 Kansas Ave. The cost is $6 they will be serving vegetable beef, ham and beans, potato and chicken and noodles, plus a variety of desserts furnished by the American Legion Auxiliary.

Potts to speak at Pawnee Rock Christian Church

Eldon Potts of Christ to the Nations will speak at the Pawnee Rock Christian Church at 7 p.m. on March 22. He will speak about his work in the Philippines and is a gospel singer. The public may be interested to know how the disasters in Japan will affect his work in the Philippines.

Adult softball leagues forming

The Great Bend Recreation Commission is now forming it's Adult Softball Leagues. All interested persons should stop by the Recreation Commission office and pick up a team packet. Leagues offered this summer includes: Men's Open Division (Tuesday/Thursday), D League (Tuesday/Thursday); E League (Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday) F League (Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday); Women's B League (Tuesday/Thursday) and C League (Monday/Wednesday). Barton Community College takes Spring Break

Barton Community College day and evening classes will be closed for the college's Spring Break March 21-25. Barton's offices will remain open through March 23, but will be closed March 24 and 25. Correction: Artist’s name misspelled

A student's name was misspelled in Thursday's article from Barton Community College about the awards presented in a juried show for area high school students. Carly Hoffman from Claflin received an honorable mention for her acrylic painting, "Welcome to the Jungle." In addition, Jennifer Berg is the current art teacher in Claflin.

Registration being taken for boating safety class

​Driver leaves ER after arrest

After a one-vehicle accident at 6:26 a.m. Sunday at U.S. 56, milepost 211, the driver was arrested by the Barton County Sheriff's Office on suspicion of driving under the influence. At the jail he requested medical assistance for shoulder pain. At 9:27 a.m., a Great Bend Police Officer responded to a disturbance at the Great Bend Regional Hospital Emergency Room, and the BCSO was called to assist. Colo. family injured on I-70

Several people from Colorado Springs, Colo., were injured at 6:10 p.m. Sunday in Russell County, when a Suburban pulling a camper-trailer attempted to pass a semi-trailer on Interstate 70, 1 mile east of Bunker Hill. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the vehicle became unstable as it passed the semi, entering the median. The driver over-corrected and the vehicle entered the ditch, rolling several times. The trailer broke free and landed upright, while the Suburban landed on its roof.

Fatality reported in Pratt County

A 2-year-old boy died Monday and others were injured in a one-vehicle accident in Pratt County. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred at 10:18 a.m.. on K-61, 1.5 miles north of Preston.

​Library’s summer hours begin

The Great Bend Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27, in observance of Memorial Day. The library will also switch to summer hours on May 28. It will be open Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed Sundays through Labor Day.

​Blood donors could win $1,000 gift card

WICHITA - Donors who present to give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards, the American Red Cross announced. In addition, their donations will honor those who gave their life for our country and support those in need of care. The Red Cross serves about 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including many Veterans Affairs medical centers.

Thieves steal large mower

A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.
