Crime Stoppers seeks tips on equipment theft
Crime Stoppers of Barton County and Great Bend is seeking information about the theft of equipment belonging to Classic Well service. Sometime between 6 p.m. on Feb. 18 and 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 21, elevators (used to hoist pipe) for a double drum pulling unit were stolen from a well site in the 5400 block of Second Street in Great Bend. Sunflower Polka Club: Wes Windholz Band to perform at free dance
The Sunflower Polka Club will have a free dance from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the Hoisington Knights of Columbus, located at Second and Main in Hoisington. The Wes Windholz Band will perform. There will be no BYOB or setups. The public is welcome to this event. The dance club enjoys a variety of music and dance styles, not just polka.
Friends of Library to meet in one week
The Great Bend Public Library Friends group will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6, in the library's Kansas Room. Plans are being made for National Library Week in April and the annual book sale. Membership is $10 a year.

Lifeguard training offered in March
The Great Bend Recreation Commission's Lifeguard Training Class will be held March 20-25 at Barton Community College. This class is for any individual wanting to become a lifeguard. Those enrolling need to be 16 years old or older. Swimming skills needed include the crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke. Russell man injured in motorcycle pursuit
A 43-year-old Russell man was injured after wrecking a motorcycle while fleeing police at 2 a.m. Saturday. Jeffrey Carl Searles was taken to a hospital in Wichita. A Via Christi Health spokesman said he remained in critical condition Saturday afternoon. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol online crash logs, Searles passed the Russell Police Department at a high rate of speed while driving a 2007 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. ElderCare rep to speak on safeguarding seniors
Karen Sessler of ElderCare will present "Safeguarding Our Seniors," at 1 p.m. Monday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Participants can learn how to keep themselves or a loved one safe at home. Sessler will cover tips on fall prevention, medication safety, identity protection, and signs that indicate an individual needs assistance. BCC to close for Memorial Day observance
The Barton Community College campus and Center for Adult Education will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. The college will resume regular summer hours on Tuesday, May 28.
Historical Village will be open Monday
The Barton County Historical Society Museum and Village will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Monday for Memorial Day. Executive Director Beverly Komarek noted the museum is usually closed on Mondays. "This special opening is to accommodate families and visitors here for the holiday." Regular admission will be charged. The historical society is located just south of the Arkansas River bridge in Great Bend on U.S. 281.
Three former inmates praised by Governor as they graduate from BCC
Graduation days are celebrations of hard work expended and the future opportunities that have been earned. They are a chance to look back on what it took to get there, as well as to look forward to what lies ahead. And many thanks are offered to those who helped along the way.

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will approve contracts for head coaches, management staff and administrative personnel when it meets at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. There will also be an executive session for discussion of personnel.
Free fishing Saturday at Kanopolis State Park
KANOPOLIS - The public is invited to take part in a short nature hike and free fishing this Saturday at Kanopolis State Park. Meet at the Wildlife Viewing Area west of the office at 9 a.m. and follow the park naturalist on the trail. Bring a fishing pole for fishing in the ponds after the hike.
Driver leaves ER after arrest
After a one-vehicle accident at 6:26 a.m. Sunday at U.S. 56, milepost 211, the driver was arrested by the Barton County Sheriff's Office on suspicion of driving under the influence. At the jail he requested medical assistance for shoulder pain. At 9:27 a.m., a Great Bend Police Officer responded to a disturbance at the Great Bend Regional Hospital Emergency Room, and the BCSO was called to assist. Colo. family injured on I-70
Several people from Colorado Springs, Colo., were injured at 6:10 p.m. Sunday in Russell County, when a Suburban pulling a camper-trailer attempted to pass a semi-trailer on Interstate 70, 1 mile east of Bunker Hill. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the vehicle became unstable as it passed the semi, entering the median. The driver over-corrected and the vehicle entered the ditch, rolling several times. The trailer broke free and landed upright, while the Suburban landed on its roof.
Fatality reported in Pratt County
A 2-year-old boy died Monday and others were injured in a one-vehicle accident in Pratt County. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred at 10:18 a.m.. on K-61, 1.5 miles north of Preston.
Library’s summer hours begin
The Great Bend Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27, in observance of Memorial Day. The library will also switch to summer hours on May 28. It will be open Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed Sundays through Labor Day.
Blood donors could win $1,000 gift card
WICHITA - Donors who present to give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards, the American Red Cross announced. In addition, their donations will honor those who gave their life for our country and support those in need of care. The Red Cross serves about 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including many Veterans Affairs medical centers.
GBHS cookbook now available
The Panther Paw Restaurant staff and management at Great Bend High School have produced a cookbook containing recipes of dishes served throughout the school year.
