Hay bales cause pile-up on K-96
Four vehicles were involved in an accident that occurred when a pickup lost its load of hay bales at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday on K-96, about 1.5 miles west of Yoder in Reno County. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol online crash logs, Brady Scott Allen Mayfield, 20, of Cambridge was driving the Dodge pickup. GBRC accepting enrollment for new recreation programs
The Great Bend Recreation Commission is accepting enrollment for the winter and spring programs, program coordinator Garet Fitzpatrick said. After-school activities are offered at the Recreation Center, Activity Center, and Park, Lincoln, Jefferson and Eisenhower schools. A variety of enrichment and recreation programs are available for children, ages 5 to 12 years. The date of the Barton County Spelling Bee has been moved from Feb. 12 to Feb. 5, and now is back on Feb. 12, a spokesman for the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis said. Missing girl returns home safely
A 13-year-old girl reported missing Monday morning is safe at home now, Detective David Bailey of the Great Bend Police Department said. Brianna A. Feist was missing when her parents looked for her Monday morning, and was considered a runaway. Her photo was published in the Great Bend Tribune in hopes that she would safely return, and Monday evening she did. Bailey said the girl turned herself in.
Correction: No trial date has been set for Longoria
An article in Sunday's Great Bend Tribune concerning the court case of Adam Longoria contained an error. Longoria's next motions hearing is scheduled to take place in March in Barton County District Court. A date for his trial has not yet been set.
One injured in weekend rollover
A car went off 150 SE 10 Road at approximately 10:50 p.m. Sunday, striking the embankment and rolling onto its top, after the driver swerved to miss a bump. The driver, Jonathan R. Allende, 14, of Great Bend, was taken to Central Kansas Medical Center with undetermined injuries.
Man flown to burn unit after sandpit accident

Historian Yarmer to talk about trade beads
Robert Yarmer will present a free program on the history of trade beads, at 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Trade beads, made in Czechoslovakia and Italy, were used by early whites to give to the Indians for good will, Yarmer says. Police investigate stolen boot
Great Bend Police are looking for a suspect with one green, size nine boot. Its mate was apparently dropped during the getaway, Detective David Bailey said Monday. Crime Stoppers seeks help solving burglary
Sometime on Jan. 3 or 4, a shed behind the Highland Hotel at 3017 10th St. in Great Bend was burglarized. Stolen were a roto-rooter, sink cable cleaner and a bundle of cables. Loss was $3,800. Barton Community College to hire cheerleading coach
The Board of Trustees of Barton Community College is scheduled to approve hiring of new personnel, including Stephanie Joiner, a candidate for head cheerleading coach, when it meets at 4 p.m. Thursday in room F-30, on the lower level of the Fine Arts Building. Other items on the agenda include approval of new policy statements on service regions and on strategic planning.
Ferguson wins Sunflower charity poker tourney

BCC trustees set to approve contracts
The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will approve contracts for head coaches, management staff and administrative personnel when it meets at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. There will also be an executive session for discussion of personnel.
Free fishing Saturday at Kanopolis State Park

Driver leaves ER after arrest
After a one-vehicle accident at 6:26 a.m. Sunday at U.S. 56, milepost 211, the driver was arrested by the Barton County Sheriff's Office on suspicion of driving under the influence. At the jail he requested medical assistance for shoulder pain. Colo. family injured on I-70
Several people from Colorado Springs, Colo., were injured at 6:10 p.m. Sunday in Russell County, when a Suburban pulling a camper-trailer attempted to pass a semi-trailer on Interstate 70, 1 mile east of Bunker Hill. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the vehicle became unstable as it passed the semi, entering the median. The driver over-corrected and the vehicle entered the ditch, rolling several times. The trailer broke free and landed upright, while the Suburban landed on its roof.
Fatality reported in Pratt County
A 2-year-old boy died Monday and others were injured in a one-vehicle accident in Pratt County. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred at 10:18 a.m.. on K-61, 1.5 miles north of Preston.
Library’s summer hours begin
The Great Bend Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27, in observance of Memorial Day. The library will also switch to summer hours on May 28. It will be open Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed Sundays through Labor Day.
Blood donors could win $1,000 gift card
WICHITA - Donors who present to give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards, the American Red Cross announced. In addition, their donations will honor those who gave their life for our country and support those in need of care. The Red Cross serves about 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including many Veterans Affairs medical centers.

The Panther Paw Restaurant staff and management at Great Bend High School have produced a cookbook containing recipes of dishes served throughout the school year.

Defensive driving class can lower premiums
The Great Bend Recreation Commission, Commission on Aging and Barton County Farm Bureau will host a defensive driving course next week at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Classes run from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, May 20, and Tuesday, May 21.

History buff Joe Boley will give a program on greyhound racing at 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Boley's free program explains how Great Bend is part of greyhound racing history.
Thieves steal large mower
A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.
No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month
The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).
Suspicious fire destroys trailer
PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames.
