Library observes holidays
Great Bend Public Library will be closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday for Christmas. The library will also be closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 for New Year's.

The Great Bend Post Office will close at noon Friday and will remain closed until Monday. There will be no mail delivery on Christmas day.

The Great Bend Recreation Commission Office and Activity Center offices will be closed Thursday through Monday. Benefit Soup Supper
A Great Bend Community Benefit Soup Supper for Shawn and Karen Crane and sons Jacob and Brandon will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the First Southern Baptist Church, 3301 19th. Free will donations will be taken to benefit the family who lost their home to a fire.
Special Santa Tickets
Special Santa tickets are for sale at Landmark National Bank to benefit Blayze Bahe who was injured in a motorcycle accident on Nov 20, 2009. His left foot was amputated as a result of the accident. The Santa was created by Rochelle Van Scyoc, a friend of the family. Tickets are $1 for one or $5 for six. The drawing will be held on Dec. 20.

Barton Community College offices will be closed for the holiday break Dec. 20-31. All offices at the college will reopen at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3. Spring semester classes will begin Jan. 10. The "Scams" program that was to be at the Senior Center on Friday afternoon has been canceled due to speaker conflict.
BCC trustees to hire new RSVP director
The board of trustees at Barton Community College is expected to hire a new head men's soccer coach and a new director of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program when it meets at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. Other items on the agenda include early childhood education certificate programs and an admissions and recruitment presentation by Todd Moore, director of admissions and marketing.

Detective Denton Doze from the Great Bend Police Department will talk about scams during a free program at 1 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. Doze will share information about scams that have been cropping up lately by e-mail, telephone and mail.

High winds disturb traffic
High winds created problems for motorists Saturday morning, the Barton County Sheriff's Office reports. At 10:26 a.m., a motorist reported as she was going over an overpass on K-156 at East K-4, a vehicle lost a cargo trailer, which was in the ditch. Kansas Highway Patrol responded. BCC to close for Memorial Day observance
The Barton Community College campus and Center for Adult Education will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. The college will resume regular summer hours on Tuesday, May 28.
Historical Village will be open Monday
The Barton County Historical Society Museum and Village will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Monday for Memorial Day. Executive Director Beverly Komarek noted the museum is usually closed on Mondays. "This special opening is to accommodate families and visitors here for the holiday." Regular admission will be charged. The historical society is located just south of the Arkansas River bridge in Great Bend on U.S. 281.
Three former inmates praised by Governor as they graduate from BCC
Graduation days are celebrations of hard work expended and the future opportunities that have been earned. They are a chance to look back on what it took to get there, as well as to look forward to what lies ahead. And many thanks are offered to those who helped along the way.

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will approve contracts for head coaches, management staff and administrative personnel when it meets at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. There will also be an executive session for discussion of personnel.
Free fishing Saturday at Kanopolis State Park
KANOPOLIS - The public is invited to take part in a short nature hike and free fishing this Saturday at Kanopolis State Park. Meet at the Wildlife Viewing Area west of the office at 9 a.m. and follow the park naturalist on the trail. Bring a fishing pole for fishing in the ponds after the hike.
Driver leaves ER after arrest
After a one-vehicle accident at 6:26 a.m. Sunday at U.S. 56, milepost 211, the driver was arrested by the Barton County Sheriff's Office on suspicion of driving under the influence. At the jail he requested medical assistance for shoulder pain. At 9:27 a.m., a Great Bend Police Officer responded to a disturbance at the Great Bend Regional Hospital Emergency Room, and the BCSO was called to assist. Colo. family injured on I-70
Several people from Colorado Springs, Colo., were injured at 6:10 p.m. Sunday in Russell County, when a Suburban pulling a camper-trailer attempted to pass a semi-trailer on Interstate 70, 1 mile east of Bunker Hill. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the vehicle became unstable as it passed the semi, entering the median. The driver over-corrected and the vehicle entered the ditch, rolling several times. The trailer broke free and landed upright, while the Suburban landed on its roof.
Fatality reported in Pratt County
A 2-year-old boy died Monday and others were injured in a one-vehicle accident in Pratt County. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred at 10:18 a.m.. on K-61, 1.5 miles north of Preston.
Library’s summer hours begin
The Great Bend Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27, in observance of Memorial Day. The library will also switch to summer hours on May 28. It will be open Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed Sundays through Labor Day.
Blood donors could win $1,000 gift card
WICHITA - Donors who present to give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards, the American Red Cross announced. In addition, their donations will honor those who gave their life for our country and support those in need of care. The Red Cross serves about 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including many Veterans Affairs medical centers.
GBHS cookbook now available
The Panther Paw Restaurant staff and management at Great Bend High School have produced a cookbook containing recipes of dishes served throughout the school year.

USD 428 has partnered with Harris Connect to produce an alumni directory. Post cards, phone calls and e-mails may be forthcoming this summer. This is a reputable company that the district has worked with for the past 20 years.
Defensive driving class can lower premiums
The Great Bend Recreation Commission, Commission on Aging and Barton County Farm Bureau will host a defensive driving course next week at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. Classes run from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, May 20, and Tuesday, May 21.
