Library observes holidays

Great Bend Public Library will be closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday for Christmas. The library will also be closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 for New Year's.

Benefit Soup Supper

A Great Bend Community Benefit Soup Supper for Shawn and Karen Crane and sons Jacob and Brandon will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the First Southern Baptist Church, 3301 19th. Free will donations will be taken to benefit the family who lost their home to a fire.

Special Santa Tickets

Special Santa tickets are for sale at Landmark National Bank to benefit Blayze Bahe who was injured in a motorcycle accident on Nov 20, 2009. His left foot was amputated as a result of the accident. The Santa was created by Rochelle Van Scyoc, a friend of the family. Tickets are $1 for one or $5 for six. The drawing will be held on Dec. 20.

The board of trustees at Barton Community College is expected to hire a new head men's soccer coach and a new director of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program when it meets at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Seminar Room, F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. High winds disturb traffic

High winds created problems for motorists Saturday morning, the Barton County Sheriff's Office reports. At 10:26 a.m., a motorist reported as she was going over an overpass on K-156 at East K-4, a vehicle lost a cargo trailer, which was in the ditch. Kansas Highway Patrol responded. ​BCC to close for Memorial Day observance

The Barton Community College campus and Center for Adult Education will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. The college will resume regular summer hours on Tuesday, May 28.

Historical Village will be open Monday

The Barton County Historical Society Museum and Village will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Monday for Memorial Day. Executive Director Beverly Komarek noted the museum is usually closed on Mondays. "This special opening is to accommodate families and visitors here for the holiday." Regular admission will be charged. The historical society is located just south of the Arkansas River bridge in Great Bend on U.S. 281.

Free fishing Saturday at Kanopolis State Park

After a one-vehicle accident at 6:26 a.m. Sunday at U.S. 56, milepost 211, the driver was arrested by the Barton County Sheriff's Office on suspicion of driving under the influence. At the jail he requested medical assistance for shoulder pain. Colo. family injured on I-70

Several people from Colorado Springs, Colo., were injured at 6:10 p.m. Sunday in Russell County, when a Suburban pulling a camper-trailer attempted to pass a semi-trailer on Interstate 70, 1 mile east of Bunker Hill. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the vehicle became unstable as it passed the semi, entering the median. The driver over-corrected and the vehicle entered the ditch, rolling several times. The trailer broke free and landed upright, while the Suburban landed on its roof.

Fatality reported in Pratt County

A 2-year-old boy died Monday and others were injured in a one-vehicle accident in Pratt County. Kansas Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred at 10:18 a.m.. on K-61, 1.5 miles north of Preston.

​Library’s summer hours begin

The Great Bend Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27, in observance of Memorial Day. The library will also switch to summer hours on May 28. It will be open Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed Sundays through Labor Day.

​Blood donors could win $1,000 gift card

WICHITA - Donors who present to give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards, the American Red Cross announced. In addition, their donations will honor those who gave their life for our country and support those in need of care. The Red Cross serves about 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including many Veterans Affairs medical centers.

Defensive driving class can lower premiums
