Barton hosts Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week at public library

Defensive driving course offered for seniors
Commission on Aging, Barton County Farm Bureau and the Recreation Commission are sponsoring a Defensive Driving Class from 1-4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 15-16, at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave. The class is taught by Steve Billinger, an officer of the Kansas Highway Patrol. A Veterans Affairs service officer will be at Great Bend's VFW hall, 504 Washington St., on Saturday, to help veterans and their families with Veterans Affairs claims. The representative will be available starting at 9 a.m. This is a drop-in service; no appointment necessary.

Olmlitz Knights of Columbus Annual Soup Supper
The Olmitz Knights of Columbus will hold their annual soup supper from 5 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Olmitz. The meal includes three different homemade soups and homemade pies. A raffle with items from area business will also be held. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.

Driver License Exam office closed today
Kansas Driver License Exam offices in the western half of the state will be closed today for in-service training, the Department of Revenue announced. Offices in the eastern half of the state were closed Wednesday. Area offices closed today, Nov. 4, include those at Great Bend and Russell.

Library’s summer hours begin
The Great Bend Public Library will be closed Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27, in observance of Memorial Day. The library will also switch to summer hours on May 28. It will be open Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will be closed Sundays through Labor Day.
Blood donors could win $1,000 gift card
WICHITA - Donors who present to give blood between May 23 and 31 in honor of Memorial Day could win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards, the American Red Cross announced. In addition, their donations will honor those who gave their life for our country and support those in need of care. The Red Cross serves about 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including many Veterans Affairs medical centers.
GBHS cookbook now available
The Panther Paw Restaurant staff and management at Great Bend High School have produced a cookbook containing recipes of dishes served throughout the school year.

Thieves steal large mower
A riding lawn mower stolen from Lang Diesel Inc. in rural Ellinwood was too heavy for two people to push up onto a trailer, Great Bend Police Chief Dean Akings said. Akings, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the mower was stolen from 15 SE 90 Ave. sometime between 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and 8 a.m. on Friday.
No Parkinson’s Support Group meeting this month
The Parkinson's Support Group will not have a meeting this month. Sponsors of this new group have decided to meet every other month, so the next meeting will be June 25. The group plans to meet on the fourth Tuesday of even-numbered months (February, April, June, August, October and December).
Suspicious fire destroys trailer
PAWNEE ROCK - An abandoned mobile home in Pawnee Rock was destroyed by fire Monday, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The fire at 128 Rock St. was reported around 11:15 a.m. Great Bend Fire Department was called to assist the Pawnee Rock Fire Department, GBFD Chief Mike Napolitano said when they arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames. "The fire is suspicious in nature and the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office was called," Bellendir said. ...
Library announces teen movie, free computer class
Great Bend Public Library will show "Annie" at the next Teen Movie Monday, 4 p.m. on May 20. The free movie is open to all students in grades 7-12. The library will have another free computer class at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. The class will explain Goodreads, the largest world's largest website for readers and book recommendations. Rape reported in county
The Barton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rape report. On Friday morning, a woman came to St. Rose Urgent Care and said she had been raped two days earlier. She said a man in a vehicle asked for directions then attacked her on a dirt road near the college (in the 100 block of SE 20 Ave. and NE 10 Road).
